Defrosting frozen breast milk

Hello!

I have a 5 week old baby and am expressing every morning after she's fed to build up some supplies of breast milk for the freezer incase of emergency or incase Mummy needs have a few hours off!

Before I gave birth I went to an NCT breast feeding workshop and I remember being told that some womens breast milk doesn't freeze properly due to ? some chemical and ? the milk decomposes in the freezer and can't be used. Apparently this only happens in some women. Can anyone explain this to me, my NCT class in December seems a lifetime away now and lack of sleep has eroded my brain!

Should I be defrosting some to check its ok before I build up stacks of milk that might not be ok.

Thank you!

hmmm i have never heard of this!

what can happen is that the milk starts to saponify (ie, turn to soap!), which can give it a strange taste.

mine does this, but neither of my first 2 babies ever complained about being fed it.

if you are worried about it though all you need to do is scald the milk before freezing it.
place it in a clean saucepan and heat until you just start to see little bubbles round the edge, then bag and freeze

do you mean lipase?

www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/lipase-expressedmilk.html has more info!

my frozen ebm smells really bad when defrosted and DS won't touch it, so i'm going to try refrigerated milk and see what he thinks of that! luckily i've only got a small supply (about 300 mls) he won't touch, i'd be fuming if it was more...
