Green, frothy and mucousy (poo questions)

DD 23 weeks and EBF

am still waiting on poo results from GP but in the meantime am getting worried (have posted about this before but things are no better)

DD poos at least 5 times per day - sometimes more but never less - usually 8 times in 24 hours

she feeds around 8 times in 24 hours

always, always green and often bright green

it is never solid, but frothy and the other day had brown (ish) mucous in ...

what could it be?

she is gaining weight, clear skin and eyes, healthy etc

she has never had anything but breastmilk

apart from a couple of colds she hasn't ever been ill

any ideas/reassurance etc?

TIA

Probably an intolerance to something in your diet. Was at the gastro with DD2 this week and they said that her poos (once a day-3 days) aren't frequent enough for a severe intolerance. Mucus is a sign of gut inflammation - DD2 has plenty of this. Top allergens are cow's milk, soy, egg & wheat. Through excluding things I've worked out DD2 is intolerant to all of these. Her main symptom is dreadful bloating, wind and gut pain. We've never managed to get rid of the mucus though, and since she is gaining weight they aren't worried by it. The pain and screaming are sub-clinical symptoms

Green & frothy AFAIK is a symptom of lactose overload, maybe from oversupply? DD2 had this too for a while and I did block feeding - only swapping sides every 3-4 hours regardless of feeding times - and it seemed to help.

Sorry it's a bit staccato - one-handed typing!

Sounds like she may have an intolerance to cows milk protein as this is the most common symptom. May be worth considering cutting milk products out of your diet and seeing if this helps but what you are describing are the classic signs.

Thanks all - am back to the GP next week

have a feeling it may be an intolerance - hopefully a mild one as she seems to be thriving apart from pooing for Britain

I was told that the more green a poo was then the less that had been digested which certainly backs up the intolerance idea.

My DD had terrible gut pain and wind for the first few months but as she was gaining weight and looked healthy doctors didn't seem bothered. Ended up giving her goat's milk formula (can buy in some health food shops and Waitrose - about £18 a tub), got her prescribed Gaviscon (she was very sicky as well) and took her to a children's acupuncturist. All of which helped (and the acupuncture cured her eczema as well!).

she isn't sicky at all ...

her brother has exzema but she isn't showing signs of it (altho' his was late onset)
