I don't very often post on here, but often read the threads and find everyone's advice really helpful. Any advice would be really appreciated

My DS was four months on Monday and since then has not wanted to feed. He manages 2-3 during the day, but has to scream like I'm trying to kill him first. He does seem to have a bit of a cold, teething and also hasn't pooed properly since the weekend. When he does feed he'll only use one side!
He also refuses to take a bottle, so I'm really concerned he's not getting what he needs. Should I be worried?

I'm thinking of trying to wean him soon, but if he won't take a bottle what else can I feed him with?

One of the main reasons I want to start weaning is because it's becoming really painful. When my milk comes in the pain is quite incredible. It's always been painful, but seems to be getting worse. My nipples aren't cracked and I don't seem to be having any problems, it just really hurts - feels like my nipples will explode!

Sorry for the massage ramble. But really do appreciate any advice.

Have you seen somebody? Is it possible that you have thrush? If he has it too it could be upsetting him.

SleepySheep · 17/03/2010 21:24

Thank you ShowOffHands. How do you know if you've got thrush?

Here.

Do you have a local breastfeeding cafe or breastfeeding counsellor who can help you out?

ProcessYellowC · 17/03/2010 21:46

The incredible pain in your nipples does sound worrying, if you are able to see a bf expert in real life (bf cafes/drop in clinics), it is probably a good idea. if you want, you could try the National Breastfeeding Helpline on 0300 100 0212 - it is closed now till 9.30 tomorrow morning.

Thrush can be tricky to diagnose, a characteristic in the baby is white patches on the inside of their mouth. www.kellymom.com has loads of good information, but again I'd suggest that you try to see a bf expert as soon as possible.

Good on you for getting this far! I hope that you are able to get this sorted out, and that your poor DS gets better soon, teething and colds can be so miserable.

I went through a bout of thrush when ds3 was about 5 months. Never had it previously but was very like what you have described, especially the one sided thing. Got it sorted out very quickly and was right and rain since. I think it was caused by him grabbing and putting allsorts of stuff in his mouth all the time and he had bitten me and broke skin slightly so think it got in that way. Ouch!

Good advice already given but I would also call the GP first thing as well as speaking to a bf counsellor. The sooner you get seen the better for both of you, it's miserable having thrush.
My GP was fantastic, really went out of her way to help us. If yours isn't so great, check out this. In fact, it's worth a look before you go so you know what to ask for.
Huge sympathy and hope you get sorted out soon.

Thank you so much for your replies. He seems slightly better today and has managed 3 small feeds. We've got an appointment at the Docs for next thursday, but if things get worse they'll see me sooner. Thanks again x
