can someone advise me about taking expressed milk out and about?

Probably a stupid question, but brain is a bit addled through lack of sleep!

My six month old takes expressed milk from a bottle but so far only warmed in hot water straight from the fridge. If he was going out with someone else what needs to be done about transporting the milk? Does it need to be kept cool with an ice pack and then how do you go about warming it when you're out?

Any tips welcome!

Thanks

Time flies so I am dredging my memory!

I recall that it keeps at room temperature for about 4 hrs.

I never had an ice pack which I guess might give you an extra hour or so?

Warming it can be done with a jug of hot water but then any undrunk should be chucked.

Lots of place now have special bottle warmers but I found the Tommee Tippee bottles we use often don't fit in them....

Hello! Yes, ebm needs to be kept cool. Tell whoever is taking it that it needs to be treated like fresh milk (which it is). When DH has taken our babies out before he has either stopped at a cafe and asked for a jug of hot water (our bottles fit really well in our teapot, so that's what we use at home). Or, he takes a small thermos flask of hot water and a suitable receptacle to put the bottle in when the need arises (he has a large camping mug that he seems to favour for this purpose). Works for us - hope you are doing something nice with your baby-free time

It probably is OK out of the fridge for a few hours, but I wouldn't want it to curdle in the bottom of a warm changing bag and then be completely useless...

ebm keeps at room temp 7-8 hours (from my lanisoh freezer bags)

I keep mine in the fridge then put in one of those bottle isulation thingys when we go out and about.
Then just ask for a bowl of hot water when milk is needed.

Not sure if you could warm in advance, put in bottle insulator thingy and then just feed when needed (within 6 hours of heating)?

Advantage of heating in cafe, good excuse for a coffee and cake

I had a small insulated lunch bag and put it in there with a freezer block to keep cool. I would also take a flask of hot water and an old margarine tub that the bottle could stand in, in the hot water to warm up. The finished hot water went back in the flask.
