DS has a blister right in the middle of his top lip. He is just over 8 months btw. He has been full of cold for the last couple of days also. I am really worried that it is a coldsore?? If it is a coldsore, will I have to stop breastfeeding him? I don't know if I have the heart to express 5 feeds a day I will be so so so upset if something like this stops me BFing him. Didn't know whether to put this is health or feeding, so put in both with the hope of a few responses before the next feed is due!!

If he has a cold might his lips be a bit drier than usual and he could be more prone to a "sucking blister"? Not sure but I remember DD had a sucking blister but that was a lot younger, maybe a couple of weeks old when she'd not been b/f long.

If you suspect it is a coldsore, take him to the doctor and ask for treatment - coldsores on babies can turn serious. I don't see why you would have to stop bfing him if it is a cold sore.

Like stripy says, it could be a sucking blister, no one on here can say for certain.

belgo, I think I read somewhere that you can get the herpes virus in your nipples if you are breastfeeding and there is direct contact. As much as I love BFing, coldsores on my nipples is not something I fancy...

Have you ever had a cold sore? If your baby does have a cold sore, where do you think she might have picked it up from?

If it is a cold sore and you are breastfeeding, you have already been exposed but most adults have already been exposed to the virus at some point in their lives anyway. The virus is potentially a lot more dangerous to the baby. I do think you should see your doctor today because fast treatment of a cold sore in a baby can stop it becoming more serious.

I think I had a coldsore once when I was about 7/8 but its not something I suffer with. It was his Christening last Sunday, so everyone would have been kissing him, and I don't know if someone might have had a coldsore? I am going to take him to the drop-in centre I think, but I think I was hoping for some tales of similar things that weren't coldsores

as stripey says, it might be a sucking blister. Do take him to the walk in centre.
