7 mo old still refusing Formula Milk

I have been perfectly happy breastfeeding my 7 mo old DD. Starting to need a day to myself as I also have an active 2 year old and am feeling quite burned out. Would like to leave 7 mo old with childminder but she still refuses bottle. She'll drink anything but formula out of bottle so it's not the bottle or the teat but the formula milk. I've tried all the formula milks with no success. Any tips? Thanks

could you express your milk for her?

justlookatthatbooty · 12/03/2010 21:23

using a hand pump the yield is so small for such a lot of time and effort. don't know where I would find the time given the current schedule.

hire a hospital grade breast pump from nct? You can get loads out with that in no time at all. perhaps you could mix ebm and formula in increasing ratios to get her used to the formula?

Do you mean the electric pumps Thandeka? I didn't know that you could get loads out that way. Does it really work so well? I'm off to get one if so.

If I'm really full, I can get 7.5oz out with my medela swing (electric pump).

Perhaps just send your DD to cm for half a day with some formula and see how she gets on! I tried with DS a few weeks back as had to go into work for a few hours. Not completely successful for me as he had none of it but he wasn't used to the cup I had put it in at that point. Half a day won't hurt her I would say if she is on solids as well.

My 8 month olds would go for 8 hours at nursery with zero milk, 3 or 4 times a week, then breastfeed at home. It doesn't appear to have done them any harm. I'm not sure ( and I'd like to hear someone point out some stats or studies) whether they'll have any long-term problems as a result. Bones don't stay constant - bone tissue is broken down and remade constantly, so a better diet at a later date would surely make up for any shortcomings.

I'd always reckoned that the recommended daily dose of things like that for children were over-estimates.

Neither of their bones seem easy to break (they've fallen off things to prove it), and their teeth are fabulous so far.

Try expressing just before your DD is due a feed, as you will be "fuller" then and it will be easier to get more milk out. You will still have milk for her, even if you feel "empty" afterwards, because the breasts make milk on demand.

You can also try expressing when she is feeding from the other side, although I never managed this (DS was always too interested in the pump to let me get on with it!)

But I did find after about 6 months, it was harder to express any large amount. I did not try very hard though as I hardly ever went out without DS. I think I got a full bottle once by expressing a couple of ounces each day for about 3-4 days.

I've never had much luck with expressing, and have finally given it up as a waste of my time...
Anyway, my DCs would take formula, but only if it was really really warm / borderline hot - maybe try that.
Otherwise, I agree with smilehomebirth, I had a friend whose DD would just drink water from a cup in the day, and have plenty of dairy in her diet. HV wasn't bothered, and she seems perfectly healthy.

Have you tried Hipp organic formula? my DS would not take bottles at all, so no point expressing,so we went from breast to cup, and hipp smells and tastes a lot better then other formula, ( yes i tried them ) and if its still the same as it was it comes in two packets in the boxs so lasts longer.

Ds was bf for one month and formula fed the rest. He gave up milk altogether at 7 months I just fed him lots of calcium food types. He does drink milk now cos dd does and he wants to be like her!!

Just suppliment with lots spinach, brocilli, yogurts, custard, rice pudding, and milk recipe sauces.

Good luck
