Is a Breville hot cup kettle safe to use for formula milk?

Hi, i'm probably being over protective here BUT we have got a Breville Hot Cup kettle which only dispenses 1 cup of hot water at a time. My question is 'does it actually boil the water and will it be safe to use when making up formula milk for our little Rory'?

Thanks for any advice

get a thermometer
if the water comes out hotter than 70C it is fine

and on a more general 'advice' note, you may want to a) change your username, b) stop signing your posts and c) not mention your children by name.
MN threads (apart from those in Chat) stay on the web forever, are Googleable even by non-members and tend to get mined by hacksserious journalists doing parenting pieces...

Thanks for the advice I will check the temperature.

I was told not by manufacturer as the water never actually boils so isn't sterile.

why would the op want to change her name and stop using her child's name? it's all in public records anyway.

i am more than happy to use my real name and those of my children online.

what do you think will happen if you do it?????

MrsBadger · 09/03/2010 20:16

only that we are seeing so many direct quotes from MN in the newspapers atm I prefer to be less identifiable online

was only making suggestions

snoflersmummy · 09/03/2010 22:33

Hey Roslilly, was that by breville?

as i'm aware that the tefal equivalent doesnt actually boil the water but as far as i have managed to research the breville one does.

I have emailed the manufacturers so will let you know what they say as i think this will be a concern for many parents.

ps, changed our name

I have had a reply from Breville

'Yes, the kettle does actually boil water. How do you want to use the machine with formula milk?'

We are using the kettle with a pirex jug and letting the water cool in that before making up any bottles.

what you need to know tohugh, is how hot the water comes out.

formula powder needs to be mixed with water that is no less than 70 degrees, in order to kill off any pathogens.

so, if the water is boiled then cooled as it comes out or before it comes out then it may not be suitable.

Definitely invest in one of those probe thermometers. It seems all kettles are different. The instructions for making up formula say to leave the kettle to cool for 25-30 min, but the water in my kettle has dropped below 70 at this point. After a few experiments, what I now do is either cool the water in the kettle for 10 minutes, or pour it into the bottle after boiling and leave to cool for no more than 5 minutes (as I make up every bottle fresh when possible and use cartons when not)
snoflersmummy - out of interest, why do you put the water into a jug to cool first and do you sterilise the jug?

thecoffeelady · 15/03/2010 21:51

we used the tefal one cup with dd, she has survived to tell the tale!

I called tefal and they said that as long as the guidelines on the formula were followed correctly there shouldn't be a problem.

It was so simple to set the required water level and not have to worry about trying to read the markers (which are clear on the BPA free bottles)

roslily · 17/03/2010 20:04

Oh actually I meant tefal sorry.
