Hello, simple question:
I know things like alcohol and spicy food can affect breastmilk, so, what about caffeine?
I ask because of having such little sleep last night

Drink what you like! No reason why you should avoid caffeine. No reason why you should avoid spicy food either. And alcohol in small quantities is fine.

caffeine can affect babies, especially younger ones according to kellymom

I found it did when my ds was about 12wks, had been very careful then made up a cafetiere with the wrong coffee.( same brand one decaff, one to wake up oh in morning)and at nine oclock had him giggling on our bed waving all four limbs very very awake! I was not amused at the time

I drank loads of (instant) coffee. I switched to decaff after my two just didn;t sleep. Not sure if it helped but I daren't switch back

I have given up caffeine for Lent and I don't think it's made any difference to DD at all. Mind you, she is a strapping 17 mo - might be different if she was only a few weeks! A lady at an NCT group I go to who has a ten month old said she can only drink one cup of tea a day or he doesn't sleep.

Thanks all. DS is 6 months and only just started solids. He certainly doesn't get affected by spices as much as he used to.

I don't drink coffee or tea at all and only rarely drink cola - so mostly caffeine free other than chocolate - but I had pepsi last night at dinner, and DS was very very very wakeful, was just wondering if it was a coincidence.

According to a biochemist friend, caffeine is fat-soluble and therefore ends up straight in your milk. I have given it up entirely apart from hot choc- one cup and baby was twitching in her sleep, waking every hour to scream in a high-pitched tone. not worth it.

that should read- one cup of coffee. hot choc still seems ok. haven't tried any cola drinks since i've been bfeeding.

I really think I can see a link between caffeine and disturbed sleep at night. I realised that Thursday nights were often terrible after I drank proper tea all afternoon at twins club. It's worth a try if you think it's a problem but if you don't see any link yourself, you probably don't need to worry.
