Was looking in Boots today and saw some Aptimel which had "Breastmilk subsitute" on the packaging, in quite large letters. Surely this contravenes the code that governs the formula manufacturers ?

They all have it I think. Because formula is a substitute for breastmilk. If you're not breastfeeding for whatever reason, you should substitute your breastmilk with formula.

I thought it was follow-on milks which claimed to be not substitutes? In an attempt to avoid the legislation governing infant formulas...happy to be corrected.

Yes infant formulas from birth have to be labelled "breastmilk substitutes" but follow on milks from 6 months+ are not labelled this because breastmilk substitutes are not allowed to be advertised - so they have to state that the follow on is not a breastmilk substitute, which is bollocks because it obviously is one!

yes the aptamil TV advert drives me nuts on this point "if you decide to 'move on' from breastfeeding...use aptamil blah blah"

small print at bottom of screen > "not a breastmilk substitute"

well i guess labelling it 'breastmilk substitute' is better than labelling it 'superior baby food' or some such

At least we all know 'substitute' means 'an inferior false version, not the real thing'
