Hi,
I am back to work in the evenings next week and struggling to get my DS to take bottle, although he will drink water from it.

There are SO many to choose from its a whole new world for me, are any better than others ?
Have SMA follow on but he doesn't seem to keen.

This is probably not the current recommendation but I couldn't get my ds to take formula either. In the end, in desperation I tried full cream cows milk and he's not looked back.

It might be worth a try, with all the provisos about allergies and stuff.

I don't know about the different formula brands, but a lot of people start off mixing EBM and formula (say 70% EBM to 30% formula) and the reduce the percentage of EBM. 'tis easier for DC to accept it that way.

Cows milk is not suitable as a main drink before 1.

DOn't use follow on. They don't need it. Just use the normal stuff. Easier to digest too.

SMA tastes revolting. Aptimil is far nicer imo. I have tasted them - it is amazing how different they taste! Get a wee carton of each and try giving it at different temperatures too. SOme wee ones prefer it room temp, others warm.

I would agree that it sounds like the milk rather than the bottle. Stick with the same bottle he has water from, otherwise he'll get confused. Gradually mixing in formula to EBM worked for me, and FWIW I use Cow and Gate, my ds didn't like the taste of SMA.

RubyBuckleberry · 03/03/2010 09:56

hmmm no idea - but jack newman does say that despite mothers being warned against using cow's milk for various reasons, there is little scientific evidence to suggest that it makes any difference in either the long term or the short term, even for very young babies. a couple of generations ago, babies who didn't bf used to be given straight cow's milk.

Also have you tried a sippy cup rather than a bottle?

chocohead · 04/03/2010 20:38

Thanks for all your replies, My Dh tried with the bottle with me hiding away and he only took 1/2 ounce, he has gone to bed though see what time he wakes !

I am back at work soon so i will not be able to feed him his bedtime feed if he doesn't take any formula this will mean he will only be having 2 feeds a day, is this enough ? (he eats well)

Feeling SO crap at the moment about having to go back to work

Chocohead
Going back to work really stressful and pants. Are you working full time? Will it be a long journey as well.
I went back part-time when my DS was nine months and he had water during the day and I breast fed him in the mornings and evenings. If I had to be out then I was out and he didn't seem to mind. He was eating pretty well by then so I didn't feel it was a problem.
What does your gut tell you to do? Also, do you have a good health visitor?
Good luck!

Google Baby Milk Action group..on their web site there are a couple of videos that describe feeding B/f and FF. They say they are trying to give none biased information.
Anyway, measuring all the formulas when one says, it's got added this that and the other v's any other, it really doesn't matter which brand (although boo hiss to Nestle/SMA already). They all have the same 'base' and any added ingredients are either not required, useless and a waste of time
Think you have to register to watch the video's but they are worth it, it's free and there is no junk mail from them

Are you going back full time? I am going back two days a week in four weeks time, was speaking to health visitor today and she semmed to think that on those days 2 bf a day would be fine. DS will be only getting water during the day. He will not take a bottle and I figure it will only be a short while till he can have full cows milk. Oh health visitor says trying with small amount of cows milk in a cup is fine as long as he is getting bf the rest of the time. DS is 10 month btw.
Good Luck

chocohead · 04/03/2010 21:03

Not back full time just 4 evenings 6-10, not a long journey so thats a bonus, he always had a really good feed at bedtime but sure he will adjust , have to keep offering.

I have spoken to health visitor and they told me to try a cup so i might give that a go.

Think i am just winding myself up about it all tonight.

Would it not be worth trying him with a big feed a wee bit earlier, before you leave and then his tea/supper later. My ds gets a big bowl of porridge if I have to be out at bed time. I then feed him when I get back if he wakes. Try not to stress too much, I'm sure everything will work out fine
