Dropping the final feed before bedtime

Does anyone have any success stories on weaning their baby at 12 months? Am down to just one feed before bedtime.

The rest of the weaning has gone well and my boy drinks cows milk from a sippy cup sort of happily at breakfast not but he doesn't seem convinced about the evening.

My husband and I are going to give it a go this week and would love to hear from anyone that has had a smoothish experience.

Thanks

We did it at 18 months. We had two nights of howling which didn't last long and we haven't looked back since.

Thanks - did he or she take milk from a cup or just go to sleep after all the howling without anything to drink? Wondering what to do if he falls asleep without milk but then wakes up in the middle of the night hungry?

We give milk at tea time and then teeth and bed. Hasn't affected sleep at all.

I don't understand, why do you need to drop the final feed at bedtime?
Lots of older kids have a cup of milk before bed..

I just moved it to tea time in a cup because it is better for teeth.

My kids are 2 and 4 and still have milk before bedtime. It just changed from bottle to cup and it kind of slows them down in preparation for bed (as they have to stop bombing around to drink it).

I stopped at @ 13 months. He still likes a bottle of cow's milk now (almost 2), we made sure that first few bed times without boob were done by DH. No drama at all, he never 'asked' for another feed, never looked back.
He is now getting bored of bottle and we're changing to sippy cup but see no need to stop bedtime milk.

thanks everyone for your advice, feeling inspired.

to be clear to 'pure as the cold driven snow', am not planning on dropping the feed/drink completely just replacing the boob before bedtime with a sippy cup.

he never took a bottle either of formula or expressed milk, hence my challenge.

will keep you posted!

told you i was

well, if anyone is interested, my little boy drank some milk from a sippy cup at tea time and before his bath and went to sleep without the boob without a whimper HOWEVER woke up hungry at 11.45pm and so had to nurse him then. Feeling optimistic that we're heading in the right direction though...

Oh that's lovely him still having a night feed at 12 months, he's a lucky boy.
How comes you want him to stop? (not judging just wondering).

luxie · 02/03/2010 21:36

So that I can have some freedom once in a while. In 12 months I haven't been able to be away from him last thing before he goes to sleep or first thing in the morning due to breastfeeding duties (he refused the bottle).

I weaned DS1 at 20 months, he steadfastly refused to drink cows' milk at all so just went without the bedtime feed (had water instead and I used to give him a yoghurt just before bedtime too). Never seemed to bother him going without the feed.

luxie · 04/03/2010 13:05

Interesting, seems to be going that way with mine. He drinks a little cows milk before his bath but definitely not as much as he used to get from the boob. Trying to make up for it by giving him more cheese, creamy sauces and yoghurts...
