Breast feeding after breast surgery

Hello!
I am pregnant with my third child at the moment. I previously ff my first two children as I had a breast reduction when I was 22 and was told I probably wouldn't be able to bf afterwards.
Anyway, after each child my milk did come in and I did leak milk when my babies cried. However, as I had made the decision (and to be honest was still quite young and uninformed) I continued to ff. (My son got on really well, but my daughter suffered allergies and other probs.)
This time I am really keen to try bf, but wondered if anyone else has been in this situation? Is it possible to bf successfully after this type of surgery?
Any info or personal experiences would be much appreciated

hi, my sis in law had a reduction and subsequently has successfully bf. i think her main problem was lack of confidence but she seemed to have a good supply and she fed for as long as she wanted to, then stopped because of other issues.

look at bfar website and they also have written a book about this, it is on that site or amazon.

good luck and well done for wanting to bf

I had a breast reduction in 2006 and last year found myself pg with DC3! I felt for sure I would not have any supply as it was a big op, but lo and behold, I did! I had, however, already made a decision to FF because of the previous surgery. I had a c/s and tried to bf in recovery though once I realised I had some colustrum. Baby really couldn't latch on and I thought it was because of the shape of nipple etc, so I didn't persevere and switched to FF when we got to the ward. However, on Day 5, for some reason I decided to give it another go and managed to feed her from one side only. The other side had a very limited supply at that stage. So again, I decided to carry on with FF. Oddly enough though I carried on leaking milk (and lots from the "limited supply" side) for weeks and weeks.

I wish now that I had persevered more and not just assumed that I wouldn't be able to.

So - you should know that you can, but make your own informed decision and not be bullied into either option.

Thanks! Both messages really useful. Will definitely check out the website you mentioned weasle.
'Can'tthink of funnyname': Think I felt similarly to you - had made decision beforehand to ff as it was still not that long since op and like you said BIG op (although totally worth it Didn't mind with my first, but regretted it with my second - Feel like it has been long enough since the op to try it this time.
Quite nervous though - hopefully will work out - can only try!
