dropping breast feeds when on solids - how?

Hello - my DS is now nearly 8months and has been on solids for nearly 2 months. We went the puree route rather than BLW as he was a little premature.

I am confused about when I should be BFing in relation to meals now. Am tending to give solids breakfast at 8, lunch at 12, dinner at 5. With breast feeds on waking, about an hour before breakfast, one mid-morning, one after lunch, and one mid-afternoon, then before bed about 6.30. There are 1-2 nightfeeds as well.

How does it work with baby dropping milk feeds once on solids?

Thanks in advance

I just stopped offering the ones i wished to drop, offered him water with his meals, ds is 9 months, still gets 4 bf at the moment, on waking, afternoon, bedtime and unfortunately still one in the middle of the night, thats the next one i'd like to drop Just take it gradually, I would try the mid morning and mid afternoon one first. Good luck

Is he still asking for all the BF and taking full feeds?

You can't really drop them until they are actually taking in food IYSWIM, sometimes at the beginning of weaning they don't take that much actual food.

If they are taking plenty of food then i simply stop offering so much. I do still feed whenever "asked" though, but would drop a feed if they were not actually having a proper feed IYSWIM.

Sorry I suppose what I'm saying is "play it by ear" which isn't very helpful!

Thanks so much. He isn't really asking for all the feeds - sometimes if we are out and about especially he won't as is too distracted.
But I am worried that if he takes less milk in the day, then he makes up for it at night.I have noticed the last time he was too distracted to feed cos we were out he definitely made up for it that night (that was a baaaad night!)
He does take in a fair amount of food, especially a bigger lunch and dinner if he has had less milk mid morning and mid afternoon.

Am totally stuck re the night feeds. It has got to the point where I not sure if he is waking for milk, but have got into the pattern of offering milk just in case he is hungry, and he does take it.

Have definitely found weaning confusing as this information does not seem to be "out there" anywhere (or am I just not looking in the right place)

Thanks for help so far xx

Oh just wanted to say the feeds are not always full feeds, meant to write in the last post.

Re night feeds, I wait until I am pretty sure they're not actually hungry at night and then do my thing - which is wait til DH has some time off work and when baby wakes at night he goes in instead of me. And does shush pat type stuff. Both of mine have slept through (more or less ) after about 3 nights of that. However all babies are different that is just what has worked for us.

I also find that giving them a huge supper and a big BF at bedtime makes for a better night - I suppose it would, wouldn't it!

At the moment DD2 is having 3 or 4 BF a day, a big breakfast, small lunch and huge supper. I am being led by her really, I offer her solids at each meal until she refuses.

That's just what I'm doing though, no idea if it is ^right6 ITSWIM

I meant to say, that he was on 3 good meals a day by that point

Thanks again.. sounds like I need to persist with the BF frequency until the meals are more substantial.
Like the idea of that night-time thing - can see that being something we try when the time comes.
Can anyone tell me what size a meal has to be to be "big"? Today he ate half a weetabix at brekkie, lunch was a good portion of fish with veg and cheese, dinner lots of pasta and cheesy sauce.. they were good portions for him.. but dunno if could be classified as big!

With mine, what I did was first drop the mid morning feed- this was the first meal I introduced lunch. I was doing an after sleep feed at about 2pm which I kept on with for quite a while. Then once tea was established I didn't give a milk feed between the after sleep feed and solid tea, then a bf before bed. Soon you are down to 3 feeds in the day (waking up- after sleep- before bed) plus any night feeds. Hopefully if they are getting plenty to eat/drink in the day then the night feeds might reduce!

Good luck.
