Contractions and breastfeeding

My dd is now 5 months and I am still having contractions when BFing. Is this normal? I know it is normal for the days following the birth, but 5 months on seems a bit extreme. She is exclusively BF and I haven't started weaning her yet. Any comments appreciated

Usually only lasts a few days, 2 weeks max, for me. Perhaps you should see your GP?

Yes, I'm coming to that conclusion. Everything else seems fine though, so I'm not really sure what he'd say/do.

Are you still bleeding at all, or spotting? I've had a quick google and only found one article that mentions pains lasting this long. From a personal point of view my afterpains only lasted 7-10 days, (even the truly wicked ones I had after DD2 that needed diclofenic to ease) but, once my periods returned (over 12 months both times) I do sometimes feel mind cramps when nursing during the heaviest part of my period.

I do think talking to your GP or HV is a good idea.

Periods started back when dd about 3 1/2 months. Not something that I expected while still exclusively BFing! I was diagnosed with endo before I got pregnant, wonder if that might have something to do with it. At this rate I'll be seeing the gynae after the GP

Thanks for the replies!

Oh, thats not fair, but I do know others who get their period back early despite exclusive bf, so you're not alone. Does she sleep well at night, it's generally when you have a break of 6 hours or more between feeds.

I do think it's worth speaking to your GP, I don't know if your endometriosis is anything to do with it, but it's worth checking out, even if it's just a scan to see what's what.

Good luck!
