Reflux medication help

DD2 has terrible reflux (silent) & Laryngopharyngeal Reflux. Wondered what medication you have been prescribed with best success? Symptoms include esophygitis, cough, etc, and so far, nothing our GP has prescribed has worked. She is 4.5months, at 18lb

What have you tried so far? We were prescribed ranitidine alongside gaviscon which worked. Gavi did nothing on it's own apart from constipate her. Dd was projectile vomiting entire bottles on a nightly basis and was failing to gain weight. It's horrible for them.

It depends if you are bf or ff? DD1 had terrible reflux and was on formula from 7 weeks - medications (we tried most of them) were useles for us. Thing that made the most difference was using a milk thickener - she wouldn't drink normal liquid milk til past a year.

my little one has reflux but was failing to thrive with it because of all the vomiting (she only hit 10lbs at 4months) and she is on domperidone, ranitidine and gaviscon.

Freyfreysmum · 21/02/2010 16:57

Well, literally anything does it, even water and she's off. Tried thickeners, carabel, enfamil AR, all of that, nothing. So going Back down the med route, after we give next week a go on colic calm. x

PS as its silent and LR there is no vomitting, just excrutiating pain, and now the terrible cough which is indicative of esoph. damage.

DD had domperidone and ranitidine - she had silent reflux. Off them both now at 10mo, and seems fine.

my DS went on omeprazole at 6 weeks and that made a huge difference. WE managed to get him off it once he went onto solids - we weaned him early for this reason. The gaviscon helped a little, but not enough to persevere with. He still refluxed on the omeprazole but it wasn't painful. Takes a good week to see effects as the oesophagus inflammation needs to settle down before they stop being in pain. Might be worth a try? Only has to be given once a day in water as well, which is a bonus. HTH

I had domperidone and ranitidine for my DS and it did work after a couple of weeks however the best thing we found was getting a wedge and putting this under his matress as this help stops the pain.

Freyfreysmum · 21/02/2010 21:05

Hmm done wedges, upright, etc etc, you name it we've tried it. Will give domp & ran a go again. x

I think you need to be under the paed and not just the GP.

Ask for a referral to the hospital. They will be a lot more experienced in treating severe reflux.

Freyfreysmum · 22/02/2010 09:47

Yes we were referred on 12th Jan - appt is 20 April can you believe. They will not class her as an emergency despite over 10 hours screaming a day, as she is gaining in weight.

Oh no that's awful.

Can you afford to go private even for just one consultation with a paed? It would be ~ £200.

Does your GP know that the appointment time is so far in the future? It may just be in the system - but he/she may have been anticipating a quicker appointment.

Is your GP a parent/ a women? I think you need to go back to another GP and say that it is not acceptable for your DD to be screaming for 10 hours a day.

My DS was diagnosed with reflux after we had weight issues at 3/4 weeks old. We told the GP we were not happy and were worried and we got an appointment at children's ward a couple of days later.

V. speedy appointment was due to DS's age and weight issues. I described his symptoms and we said we wondered about reflux.

He was ok once I started topping him up with formula and using Gaviscon.

I seem to remember that there are websites out there about reflux and silent reflux (try google). I am sure that it is bad to wait so long for effective treatment - due to damage to the digestive track?

Maybe you could get into the children's ward via A&E?

JPK123 · 06/04/2010 19:06

i agree - your gp should give you faster referral to oupts or send you to paeds day ward - we were waiting for outpatients but went to day ward instead as DD1 stopped feeding and was projectile vomiting, and got gaviscon and ranitidine which made a massive difference - dont be afraid to be pushy, the paeds realise its nasty even if your gp doesnt seem interested.
good luck

JPK123 · 06/04/2010 19:08

ps, the cough is due to milk going down wrong way into lungs and irritating them, rather than oesophageal inflammation.

cloclo76 · 06/04/2010 20:10

I agree you should get a referral. DS had silent reflux. Was on Gaviscon for a month but it gave him terrible constipation so we moved onto Ranitidine which worked so well he was a different baby within a week. Off the ranitidine when he starting walking.
