I remember a couple of years ago a few posts popping up talking about this book. I assumed they were by the author (don't know if they were or not) and was a bit mean. Well anyway I've just read it and it's FANTASTIC. I wish I'd had it before I BF the first time. There are a couple of areas I disagreed with but other than that I thought it was great. Would like to know what anyone else thinks - particularly anyone who did buy it to help them with bf for the first time?

Ooh have been meaning to read this for ages, The author is a friend of a friend. Her posts were a bit mean? Pray tell.

StealthPolarBear · 14/02/2010 12:40

No, I was a bit mean to her, iirc (or maybe I didn't actually post, just thought it). Sort of, stop the free advertising iyswim. At t he time I thought a cartoon book about bf was a stupid idea

Thanks for the reminder, will get round to reading it soon hopefully.

There's a fantastic picture of "The perfect mother" or ("a good mother") which is a woman sitting in the middle of a room breastfeeding happily, while her toddler watches CBeebies, washing piled up, dirty dishes waiting to be washed etc. Think the NHS should get her permission to use it on a leaflet!

The Food of love is a very good book for anyone wanting to learn about breastfeeding.

The cartoons make it fun to read as well.

StealthPolarBear · 14/02/2010 15:11

and I noticed it had been published in such a way that the book stays open on the page you're on, as opposed to you having to hold it open - genius!

who is the author? Would you recommend it as a gift (my SIL is expecting and seems nervous about BFing)?

StealthPolarBear · 14/02/2010 15:33

Kate Evans, and definitely, although there are parts they disagree with, for example, she seems very anti drinking anything when bf. Also she mentions a few times that stress can affect supply (as opposed to let down).

BUMP!

When milk 'came in' I simply referred DH to correct page to go buy supply of cabbage.

We could laugh about it afterwards.

Bit too mother earth-ish for my liking but still v good book..

I thought it was a fantastic book (haven't had baby yet though!). Its very pro breastfeeding with lots of really useful info for diagnosing problems etc. It also recomends bed-sharing etc which is fine as that is what I plan to do. My favorite picture is of the "advanced breastfeeding position" in the back of car where both mother and child wear the appropriate seatbelts etc

Has made me feel very positive about breastfeeding and more confident about dealing with probs that may arise.

lovely lovely book- read it in one sitting. Wish i had read it before ds1 was born. Also wish i was friends with the author.
I did disagree with the toddler 'discipline' naughty step bit at the end.

StealthPolarBear · 15/02/2010 08:44

yes, i liked the car feeding pictures
Plus the line drawing of the milk drunk baby - that's exactly what mine looked like
