Please help me, think I am getting thrush in my nipples :(

Posted a couple of days ago re whether it was possible for DD and I to keep re-infecting each other with vaginal thrush (I have had it on and off for a few months now, think she has it too) without showing symptoms of oral/nipple thrush. I've just been reading some links from Kellymom and it sounds as though that is possible, but I've also been having shooting pains in my breasts over the last couple of days.

I saw the GP on Wednesday, who prescribed Daktacort for DD's bottom and Daktarin for my nipples/her mouth. The Daktarin is supposed to be eaten though, so I'm not sure whether it's supposd to help me as well. Should I be treating my nipples with something else? Can I put Daktacort on them? Can I put Daktacort on my fanjo? Should I try to get some Diflucam as well?

Just been reading some helpful descriptions of the agony which awaits me if the symptoms kick in and panicking a bit

I had this with ds. Go back to GP (as an emergency app) and ask for oral tablets - yes like DIflucan, but you should take a full course of them to get rid of it, or in this case to act as a prophylactic. I would think if you don't have any symptoms on the nipples or in the baby's mouth, and dd is feeding well, then that should be fine, as long as you keep on with the oral stuff for baby. In the meantime, call NHS direct and ask if Diflucan is ok to take while BFing (to be on the safe side) and get a dose today.

Well, that's what I would do, anyway!

Cheers The internet seems to think that fluthingyazone/Diflucam (I have been drinking this evening! ) is fine when bf and in fact I should be having a stronger dose.

Oh, I know it is! Just covering my ass! I had a week of strong "diflucan" prescribed by doc and it was fab.

MadameDefarge · 14/02/2010 05:00

I mean, fab as in thrush free for ages and ages, at least a year or so!

Should be treating your nipples with Daktarin cream and baby's mouth with the gel. Gel doesn't get absorbed into your skin properly, so won't stay on long enough to have an effect. But definitely fluconazole if the cream doesn't have an effect. I've just had a six week fight to get some from GP, but it's worked!

Thanks! Would I have to wash the Daktarin off before bfing? DD will be at the childminder all day tomorrow so will apply Daktacort and wash off before I feed her, unless I manage to get hold of some Daktarin in a hurry.

Are Daktarin and fluconazole both prescription only? I seem to remember buying generic versions of Diflucan before over the counter, but things might have changed. I know it's very expensive.

You can get Daktarin over the counter. I'm not washing it off, but applying straight after a feed so it's sunk in by the time I feed again. You can't get high enough dosage of fluconazole over the counter. It might be that the cream works for you, but I needed the heavy stuff. Good luck - it's SO horrible having thrush.

Fab, thanks. Just emailed my dad to see if he has any - he's a retired GP, so tends to have that kind of thing lying around! - otherwise will pick some up tomorrow. I don't think it's too bad yet - just getting the occasional shooting pain atm (and on and off godawful itching!).
