Quick poll:does what you eat really affect your bf baby? And how?

With ds1 and dd I never noticed thst what I ate had any effect on them so dismissed the notion as bunkum. However, ds2 (9wks) has been really windy, unsettled and grouchy (with funny poo to boot) since I ate a not particularly spicy curry on saturday. I'm not sure whether he is suffering from the curry or some kind of bug.

What is your experience?

Thanks

For me and ds's it has never made any difference.

StealthPolarBear · 10/02/2010 13:19

not noticed anything for my 2. drink (alcohol) & eat whgat i like. I did start drinking decaff coffee a little while ago (used to drink loads of instant) to see if it made a difference - it doesn't seem to, but I'm too scared to go back to caffeinated

Not in the UK, but when we went on holiday to Thailand DS 5 months definitely noticed the difference - took about 3 days for his nappies to settle down, but then he was fine once he had adjusted.

trixymalixy · 10/02/2010 13:26

my DS screamed when I was bfing him. he would only feed for 10 mins and then pull off. He would then need to feed an hour later because he was still hungry.

My GP poh-poohed my suggestion of dairy allergy as he said there was no way anything I ate could transfer through my breast milk and insisted it was reflux even though the medications were doing nothing.

DS did have a dairy allergy in the end and also an egg allergy and was a different baby once I cut these out of my diet.

With DD I had to stop eating Brocolly, Hummus and any product containing soya. It really upset her a lot. I also realised when in Spain that Esparragus were upsetting her as well.

I started introducing those foods on my diet when she was around 3 months and bit by bit so I could see if it had any effect on her. Still I cannot eat hummus but she is fine with everything else. Some friends could't eat mushrooms, cabagge, garlic, tomatoes. I guess each baby is different and you need to find out what upset your child.

Good luck

I thin it depends on babies. Some people ay not find that their food upset their babies but other people may have to cut on some food.

I have been drinking decaf tea and coffee since I was pregnant but if I had a ocasional normal coffee or tea my daughter was having a very bad day as a result.

Chack what you eat and you soon realise what is affecting your baby.

bellamysbride · 10/02/2010 13:56

The only thing that seems to affect my DS is Champagne .

StealthPolarBear · 10/02/2010 14:44

can't be bella! i demand a retest

CrosswordGeek · 10/02/2010 18:10

I think it really is dependant, DD never seems to really care what I eat or drink.... Though she does seem to sleep better if I have three a glass of wine.

itstooruddycold · 10/02/2010 18:52

My DS gets an upset tummy if I have a chinese - doesn't seem to matter what i order it must be the oil/fat they use; seems he is set on me cooking every night and not getting a takeaway once in a while!

DitaVonCheese · 10/02/2010 19:43

When DD was born I was drinking about a pint of milk a day and I swear it had an effect on her, though DH doesn't believe me. When she was little she couldn't lie flat on her back without making this really odd grunting noise, but it disappeared as soon as I cut dairy out of my diet. It did come back once, then I realised I'd had a huge hot chocolate in a cafe that afternoon

Phased it back in when she was about three months with no problems.

DD used to be really windy and colicky if I had broccoli, cauliflower, sprouts, cabbage, etc. Now is fine though.
