Help! 9 month old has refused all milk for over 24hours

DD has never been a big milk lover but was ill over the weekend (throwing up) and has hardly had any milk since then. She just refuses to even have the bottle or cup in her mouth. Yesterday morning she had about 5 oz but since then absolutely nothing.

She will have a little bit of water and I've given her fruit to try & keep her fluids up. She is eating ok but Dr has said to concentrate on fluids more than food.

She is having wet nappies but not as many or heavy as I'd like and seems happy in herself. Her poos have gone very pale which I don't think is a good sign.

I'm going to take her back to the doctors tomorrow if she hasn't had anything by then but any advice until then?

My ds got taken into hospital once as he was violently sick, with diarrhoea and was refusing even water.

The advice I was given was to give him a few sips of water every 2 hours even in the night (might mean setting your alarm .

Even if there are not as many wet nappies, as long as they are definitely wet then it means that their body is getting more water than it needs.

If she is happy in herself then I would just continue with fluids.

I was also told that it's if they have a dry nappy for 9 hours or more that you need to worry.

Hope that helps .

PS He was around the same age as your dd so I'm sure same advice would apply.

Thank you - that is reassuring. Sorry that your DS ended up in hospital. That is what I'm worried about.

Good idea about small sips every couple of hours. Don't think I'll have to set the alarm though-she's not sleeping very well

I try to trust that she'll have milk if she needs it but it's hard not to worry.

I know it's hard isn't it - I am a major health worrier!

Has she stopped being sick now? Some of these sicky bugs can last up to a week.

The other thing that is good if you are worried about her hydration is Dioralyte. They advised me in the hospital to make up the Dioralyte and make up the milk and then put half and half of each into a bottle. Then give sips of that over the space of an hour (then you have to throw away).

It's a bit of hard work when they are ill like that, but she will be fine soon.

DS has had several sickness bugs and he's only 19 months!!

Yes -she's stopped being sick now thank goodness. I got it last night though so that has been a bit of a nightmare.

I might send DH out for some dioralyte. Thanks

Aw bless you - the only thing worse than a sick child is when you are ill yourself at the same time!

Hope you both get better soon .
