Advice on thrush while breastfeeding please

DS is 21 months.

In October he developed oral thrush.
GP gave Nystatin (sp?) drops, and it cleared up.

About 3 weeks ago, it came back, and we went to GP, got the drops, and although I occasionally missed a dose , it seemed to clear up. Last week he had a bout of mildish gastroenteritis, which has now cleared, but I think the thrush is making a reappearance.
First I know about it is bloody drool on the bedsheet in the morning, which we had this morning.

I thought I would need treatment too, but the GP said as I had no symptoms I didn't.

I have found the BfN leaflet, which I will print off and take with me.

Any advice on what to say to a very experienced GP to convince him of some differing opinion?

What else do I need to do to get rid of the thrush?

You can take a probiotic capsules. They will help both of you as they cross over in the milk. Instead of drops get mouth gel for him and then apply it to your nipples right before a feed and that will treat both of you. Worked for me with DS1. Good Luck, Sim

Thanks Sim, I'll look into probiotics.

kellymom.com has all sorts of alternatives - grapefruit seed extract, gentian violet (paint your nips purple ). No idea whether any of them work but it is a good, well-researched source of info generally.

Vital that you are both treated or you will reinfect each other. My otherwise excellent, pro-bf GP did not realise this.

I'll have another look at kellymom, not beenon there in ages!

Thank you.

there is a natural company called 'biocare' if you speak to their technical department they give you advice. they are good.

Good ide about the leaflet, my GP was also clueless.
I shifted my thrush with anti-candida diet, basically no sugar of any kind including fruit, and no refined carbs. If you google there is loads of info.

DS and I have been suffering as well. We have been prescribed Daktarin gel (which is stronger/more effective than the Nystatin drops but isn't licensed for very young babies - not because of ingredients but because of choking hazard. We had it when DS was 6 weeks and just told to only put tiny bits on at a time). The Daktarin can be used on your nipples as well.

wastingaway · 16/02/2010 11:14

This had dropped off my threads I'm on, sorry.

I'lldo some more googling Me30 and Sputnik.

Yes, we got Daktarin gel for DS and Daktarin cream for me.
Giving DS the Daktarin gel is very painful.
