Had my baby on monday, and got started on the breastfeeding asap! but by tuesday morning my nipples had started to crack, and i have been over and over her postioning and latch with the midwife and its all fine, she is my 4th and ive never had this trouble with my others, but despite my best efforts and LOTS of lansinoh they arent getting any better at all, and every single time i feed her the agony is LITERALLY unbearable - im at my wits end - what on earth can i do? i cant bear the pain but i dont want to give up breastfeeding already! i REALLY need some help, anything at all!!

Try rubbing some breast milk into the nipple after each feed. It has amazing healing properties. Worked wonders for me. I thought mine were going to drop off until I did this. The difference after doing I even once was amazing. I would check the positioning and latching on too. Good luck!

I know the likelihood is it is just soreness, but is there any chance it could be thrush if you are getting this much pain? May be worth just checking the symptoms even if only to rule it out.

Thanku so much for all this advice everyone!! Im still at it, havent got so much as a bottle teat in this house let alone formula/bottles etc and i refuse to get some as i may have weakened by now! My poor nipples are in a pretty sorry state, every latch is eye-watering agony, im watching closely and she doesnt seem to quite open her mouth big enough, when she does get on and feeding ok she periodically bites/nibbles/sucks at just nipple and kind of chomps - AWSOMELY painful, ive checked her mouth and i cant see any sign of thrush, not sure of all symptoms though. What about tongue tie? how would i know if she has this? HOW do i get her to open her mouth wider to latch??

agree with the other lady, Jelonet is really fast working (think its for burns) and worked for me when lansinoh did nothing. it healed my nips within hours.
also, get her checked for tongue tie.
good luck

ManyMonkeys - you need to speak to a BF counsellor asap!! they know all the tricks in the book when it comes to getting latch right. Cream is not going to fix this - it's designed to soothe mild soreness, not prevent eye-watering agony. Did you try one of the helplines yet?

Do NOT use nipple shields unless for an incredibly short period of time.
they WILL affect your supply!!!

See a Lactation Consultant and get them to check for a Tongue Tie!
Paeds / MWs don't pick them up.

If you take your finger and sweep it underneath your baby's tongue, there should be no obstruction (like a piece of skin), if there is, that's a tongue tie.
however, it could be a sub-mucosal tongue tie too which is hidden!
