DS has the norovirus - mild to average case of it, on its way out as of this morning, but vomiting fairly frequently yesterday.
Someone warned me not to let him become dehydrated (yes, thank you - I think most everyone knows that ) and then said not to give him any dairy (not that I actually asked for any advice BTW!). I said he's having breastmilk and very dilute apple juice, that's all.

Cue a horrified gasp and "but that's dairy!! You can't give him that!"

WTH?

Yes, ok, it's milk, but last I checked, it's my milk, I haven't suddenly turned into a cow! My girls may not be as perky as they used to be but I don't yet qualify for 32 "L for Long" udder-holders!

FFS.

It ended up as a circular arguments along the lines of "it's not dairy" and "yes it is!"... what could/ should I have said?

you should have said nothing and just laughed, as obviously such a silly statement must have been a poor attempt at a joke

tiktok · 04/02/2010 14:58

Who on earth said that to you, jacksmama?

Medical def. of 'dairy' does not include human milk www.mondofacto.com/facts/dictionary?dairy+products

RemyMartin · 04/02/2010 15:00

Unless your name is Daisy or Ermintrude, there should be no problem.

slightlystressed · 04/02/2010 15:03

DS2 recently had D&V NHS direct told me to feed him anything he wanted...milk or food...even if he keeps it down for half hour he'll be getting something out of it. They were very clear not to withold anything.

StealthPolarBear · 04/02/2010 15:03

assuming the person telling you this wasn't a HCP you should have said "thank you for your advice i will file it in b for bin"
Actually, no, people need to know the feeding through D&V is the right thing to do!
Hope he's continuing to improve

StealthPolarBear · 04/02/2010 15:05

ss my GP told me that too about DS I think. As long as you're sensible about food (prawn curry prob not a good idea!) to give food as wanted and loads of water. Had a vomiting bug myself a little while ago and was amazed at how quickly you get dehydrated.

thumbwitch · 04/02/2010 15:08

Um, silly person to have said that to you BUT there is a small point to it - any fat-containing food, including your BM, JM, can irritate the gut lining and slow its healing, thus prolonging the D part of D&V. Quickest way to settle the gut is to avoid all fat-containing foods until the D settles down.

However, since it is norovirus, this might not make any difference - it does make a difference in food poisoning.

wastingaway · 04/02/2010 15:14

Why does fat irritate the gut?

thumbwitch · 04/02/2010 15:41

can't remember why - GP told me ages ago and it is true, anything with fat in prolongs the D whereas dry carbs and non-fatty fluids don't. If I could remember the biology of it I would explain properly but my brain has gone .

foxytocin · 04/02/2010 15:45

you should have said

I. am. not. a. cow.

then look and wait pointedly for a reply.

there is the funny/sad story of the MNer who had to spell this out to a paediatrician some years ago. I forget who.

tiktok · 04/02/2010 15:50

thumbwitch, you may be right about fat and the gut, but human breastmilk fat is presumably ok because standard advice for kids with D&V is to continue breastfeeding because of its healing properties.

This has been the case for many years.

More recently, formula milk has become exempt from the 'no dairy' advice in young babies.

thumbwitch · 04/02/2010 15:57

I guess the person JM was talking to didn't know that either, Tiktok. Thanks for letting me know - I'll bear it in mind for the future

Notanexcitingname · 04/02/2010 16:56

Actually when ds2 (11 months) had d&v last week I was told by NHS direct not to withhold food or milk of any type from a chhild of this age. (not that he wanted anything but my milk, but still)

Of course toddler covers a fair range, and your ds maybe older

(but you're still not a cow!)

Hulla · 04/02/2010 17:20

Hi Jacksmama - I was just going to post asking if bm was dairy after a conversation with two males colleagues yesterday. One made a comment about bm being dairy and I said of course it's not dairy and he asked why not and it kind of stumped me. I googles but got nothing useful.

Their attitude to bf is astounding. Last week they asked me about expressing and I mentioned that work had offered me a fridge just for bm (I don't express - dd doesn't drink it). Colleague says "wow, is that incase we drink it because it's not pasturised?". I reminded him that dd drinks it "unpasturised" without any problems. Silly. How do accidentally drink bm anyway?like I'd store it in an old milk bottle or something.

Hulla · 04/02/2010 17:21

Ps in my rant I forgot to say hope Jackbaby gets better soon x

Jacksmama · 04/02/2010 17:28

Tiktok it was a random acquaintance - the type who doesn't let you finish a sentence and immediately jumps in with unsolicited crap advice.

I actually laughed out loud at "unless your name is Daisy or Ermintrude" - thanks for that, LOL! And "b for bin" and prawn curry... oh, I needed a laugh!! We had a small tea/screen interface issue for a second but it's all good now

He's getting better, thanks - last vomiting episode 1 am last night, nasty pooey nappy this morning but daddy is home with him so I don't have to deal with that poor DH .

Thumb, I didn't know about fat irritating the bowel lining, very good to know - I just went with everything I learned in all those aeons years of school about how breastmilk is the best thing for little sickies. Unlike the friend whom we probably got this from, who fed her two-month-old corn syrup dissolved in water rather than continue breastfeeding her when they were ill last week... apparently "breastmilk was making her sick so she threw it all up and I had to feed her something else"... gah!!! Oh well.

and deep at the friend feeding her tiny baby corn syrup!!

Jacksmama · 05/02/2010 02:37

I know .

Have just gotten up for the first time since I left work rather hurriedly - I got The Bug too . Had to cancel everyone and had eight hours of misery when I got home.
