Why is it so hard to get a fluconazole prescription?

I was lucky in that my GP was happy to look at the BFN info, spoke to BFCs herself and did some research into meds so that she could help me.

But I see so many women posting that their GPs are refusing to prescribe fluconazole- WHY???

It seems so unfair that they have to fight to get help. Thrush is so painful and can make it difficult to continue breastfeeding. Surely there should be a more coherent approach to treatment?

I asked my GP this when she initially declined my request for it when I had thrush with DS2. My previous GP at another surgery years ago was fine to give to me for DS1 but fast forward a few years (and new surgery) and it was a HUGE battle.

Basically she said it was not licensed for BF mothers and if something had happened (to baby) she would be liable. I even asked if I could sign a waiver (I had all the info form BFN and was happy to take) but she said even that was not allowed. The drug company has to run a few years of research to get it properly licensed and they just don't want to spend the money. The GP's can be liable if there is a reaction to prescribing an unlicensed drug to a bf woman.

Thankfully I got my GP to relent but not w/a bit of an argument. Some GP's just flatly refuse which is a shame.
