cooling formula feeds

now giving ds some formula and want to follow the current guidelines. However was thinking it might be easier if we kept a wee sterile bottle with exactly 2ml of cooled boiled water in the fridge then make up the bottle fresh with 2ml less than required water and mix to cool.

Does anyone do this? Any reason i shouldn't?

2ml?

I used to fill the bottle 1/4 full of boiling water, mix in the whole amount of powder, then add the cooled boiled water to cool it down. I think this is what you mean?

Because the powder isn't sterile, it needs to be mixed with liquid above 70c I believe.

hairtwiddler · 31/01/2010 08:31

i meant 2oz sorry!

Thanks. Can't see any reason why not to do this if I'm sure have exactly the right amount of water needed.

You might need more than 2ml... thats approx half a teaspoon of water

Presume you mean 2oz?

Sounds fine, and well done for making the feeds properly - its a personal crusade of mine. So many people dont bother because "next door neighbours' cousins' brothers' girlfriend is a mw and she said it would be fine" or "My mum made bottles up for me this way and I'm healthy" blah blah blah.

Just be careful when you add the powder to the boiling water and shake, it can burst the valve on the bottle and spray all over you.

hairtwiddler · 31/01/2010 08:56

Thanks. Due to a kind mumsnetter on my other thread I now have some extra bottles so plan to use these without teats to keep some cooled boiled water in the fridge every day for cooling.
Suspect this is better than adding to the made up bottle using the measuring lines as once you add the powder it could be easy to get the amount wrong... does that make sense?

off topic geordieminx, but are you a geordie, and does that mean we're close neighbours? Am in Newcastle.

Hairtwiddler that makes perfect sense.

Another option is to mix whole feed with boiling water then leave under a running cold tap. (Then again, that's not very environmentally friendly is it?)

Just a thought too, but if the bottles you are using contain BPA then you are advised to mix with boiling water in the bottle as it releases the BPA.

Supercherry · 31/01/2010 09:23

Sorry, that was supposed to say, you are advised NOT to mix the boiling water in the bottle, if it contains BPA.

wukter · 31/01/2010 09:33

That's what I do, it seems to work ok. No expert though.
Never knew that about the BPA though, how will I know if bottle contains it?

geordieminx · 31/01/2010 09:36

hairtwidller - I'm originally from ch-le-st, but live in Glasgow now.

tethersend · 31/01/2010 09:58

Makes sense, hairtwiddler- although I measured out the cooled boiled water separately IYSWIM, to make sure that the ratios were correct.

Meglet · 31/01/2010 10:01

I always kept 2 glass tumblers of water in the fridge and plonked the bottle in the glass (on the side of the sink as the water overflows) and it cooled it in a few minutes. Much less faff than holding it under a running tap and freezing my hand off.

hairtwiddler · 31/01/2010 10:23

geordie -used to live there too, in the west end. Great city.

I'm using tommee tippee bottles and think they are bpa free. NUK ones for the cooled boiled water in the fridge - think they are too but will check.

meglet - your way would work too - hadn't thought of that.

Thanks all, it's such a faff isn't it? I suppose will get used to it.

I whack it in a jug of cold water to cool it, im alwayscared of getting the measures wrong if I were to do it the other way.

hairtwiddler · 31/01/2010 10:43

Am hoping i don't have to do this more than twice a day but will see what ds has to say about that.
I may try the jug of cold water in the fridge instead as it does seem quicker.
Maybe if doing night feeds (hope not) could keep cooled boiled water in cool bag along with empty sterile bottle and flask with hot water and measured out formula in bedroom.

OP posts:
Supercherry · 31/01/2010 16:58

Hairtwiddler, you can always buy ready made cartons for the night feeds then you won't have to mix at all. Definitely worth it if you have the spare cash.

Meglet, I didn't used to stand there holding the bottle under running water I would just pop the bottle in the sink under the running tap and leave it.

Wukter, if the bottles are plastic they should state BPA free somewhere on the packaging. If they don't they probably do contain BPA.
