Microwave broke-how to sterilise bottles??

HerMomminess · 30/01/2010 22:20

Hi there,

Microwave packed in this eve.DH went to Tesco's without the Tommee Tippee Steriliser;bought microwave same dimensions as previous one. Yet plate raised so steriliser won' t fit!!

Unless we take out the glass plate but then it wobbles and occasionally gets stuck.

Any ideas? I think I have some bag thingys somewhere.

Is it safe to use like this or should we go hunt for another one?

Advice please. FF baby!

Don't bother sterilising at all. Do you have a dishwasher? Just wash them thoroughly and sling them in the dishwasher.

ilovesprouts · 30/01/2010 22:24

a large pan of hot boiling water

HerMomminess · 30/01/2010 22:25

Hi llaregub. (Hope you are planning your next run .

I thought I have to keep sterilising up to a year if using ff.

That' s acc to HV anyway.

DD is 6mo this week. And bf supply coming to an end.

I used to use a large pan of boiling water before the days of being able to afford dishwashers and steam sterilisers.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 30/01/2010 22:27

Dishwasher or hot water.

onadietcokebreak · 30/01/2010 22:27

Use milton tabs as a cold water sterlisier.

HerMomminess · 30/01/2010 22:28

Seriously??Dishwasher enough? On 60C cycle?

Yes, I ran tonight!

By 6 months your baby is probably eating dust off the floor. Mine did anyway.

I've never sterilised anything for my youngest baby. He is 9 months and in pretty rude health.

But if you really want to sterilise Milton tablets in a bucket of cold water will do the trick.

wuglet · 30/01/2010 22:31

If your baby is 6 months he (she) will soon be putting all sorts of crap stuff into its mouth.
Dishwasher absolutely fine!

shallishanti · 30/01/2010 22:32

no, 60 not enough. To sterilise you need boiling, but not sure how long for- I'd guess 5 mins?

HerMomminess · 30/01/2010 22:33

She has indeed been BLW for past 3 weeks. Ironic HV 'lectured' just this week re always adding formula to sterilised bottle blah blah blah.

Hey ho.

Think you habe all spared DH another trip to 24h Tesco.

Tonight anyway

The easiest method would be a Milton solution. You can buy a cold water steriliser designed for this. Otherwise just chuck the bottles etc. in a large bowl of cold water with dissolved Milton tablets, cover with something heavy and leave them there until you need them.

gaelicsheep · 30/01/2010 22:36

Oh, the baby's 6 months. Yep, dishwasher will be fine.

HerMomminess · 30/01/2010 22:37

Sorry bout typos!!

There was a massive thread on here about sterilising. RTKangaMummy (I think) started it and I think she was told by a neo-natal unit not to sterilise. But you may want to have a look for it and not take my word for it. I do remember reading something about the formula powder not being sterile but I don't really know anything about formula. I know I never needed to sterilise breastmilky bottles.

HerMomminess · 30/01/2010 22:39

PS- how very sad that this is the most active thread??

Visited friends in the USA when their baby was 11 weeks.... they didnt sterilise at all, just washed up in v hot water. I was horrified however Baby is now 13 months and has never had a days illness.
They do use bottled purified baby water for mixing formula however, not boiled tap water.

HerMomminess · 30/01/2010 22:41

Yup, issue re formula not being sterile so it has to be made up with water above 70 C. (Don' t ask me how you know what temp it is!)

And, yes, apparently discrepancy between what HV/DOH says vs what NNU actually do!

Tabouleh also posted v good advice. I'll have a quick look.
