Need advice on Avent BPA-free and BPA-free bottles in general

DD who is nearly 6 is still taking her milk using baby bottles (sigh am reluctant to wean her off them as she enjoys them too much, though i know i should) and am chucking out all our avent bottles as am still using those clear white ones which aren't bpa-free. i've only just been introduced to this new technology called bpa-free and am outraged that they didn't have it 6 years ago! anyway the real reason i'm chucking them out is because she was diagnosed with leukaemia last month and i'm throwing out everything remotely connected to a risk of carcinogens, however remote. and i never realised that baby bottles were made using toxic materials

anyway. my questions are:

  1. do the normal avent teats fit their bpa-free bottles? and are the teats themselves always bpa-free or do i have to check the labels?

  2. although, even if they do fit, am loathe to buy avent again, because they still carry on selling the normal toxic bottles, besides selling their bpa-free non-toxic ones. can anyone recommend any other brands? haven't shopped around for bottles much, have always been using avent, so am a bit out of touch!

Thanks for any help!!

  1. yes they fit and are BPA free (made from silicone I think)
  2. Anyway, the Avent BPA free bottles leak badly so I'd avoid.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery for dd.

Thanks BlameIt! Have gone and bought MAM and LifeFactory glass bottles.

Am a bit confused with the MAM instructions though, it says NEVER to pour boiling water into the bottle but then it also says before first use you MUST clean the bottle and parts with boiling water. Huh?

Hi hazlinh, I used Mam with dd. Do you have the ones with the vent at the bottom that you take off?? If so, if you put boiling water in them it can cause them to pop off - Happened to me several times and I got covered in milk

If you have the normal ones then I always put boiling water in them and they were fine.

I hope you dd has a fast recovery and that you are ok

thanks mama! i have the normal ones. sigh dd isn't happy, she said she has to suck harder to get the milk compared to avent ones.

Asda do a really cheap range of BPA free bottles. Maybe you could try one of those?

So very sorry to hear of your DD's illness. Sending get well soon wishes.

Bless her, have you tried getting faster teats or using a knife to make the holes bigger?

The normal ones are fine for boiling water - We never had any problems. Maybe the lids popped off once or twice when shaking the milk but thats all
