We all have our own ways - what really works?

for me with both my dds i sat them on my lap with my hand under their chin and rubbed their backs.this worked for me.

SilveryMoon · 30/01/2010 12:02

With mine, I found that sitting them on my knee with one hand under their chin and the other pushing their lower back's in so were sitting dead straight and gently bouncing my knee worked well.
Ds1 had bad reflux so rubbing aggrevated it all more

Do babies need winded automatically? Not all countries do it. I think it is quite a British thing and sometimes I think babies get upset by being constantly rubbed to burp.

THat said, it the baby is showing signs of wind then ravenophelia's technique plus rocking back and forward at the same time can be effective.

Also muslin over the shoulder and hold baby up there with gently back rub.

the cycling leg movement one where babie lies on its back and the massaging tummy in a j shape with heel of hand. Feels akward at first but soon becomes natural - got them from the baby whisperer book - dd1 vvvvvvv collicky they were brilliant!

baby over shoulder for j one. also very improtant to massage in right direction.

I think it probably varies between babies which is why people have different techniques. I used tiger in the tree baby yoga position which is basically where you lie them along your forearm, letting their arms and legs dangle down, their head near your elbow, and I either rocked him like this or stroked his back - he used to get very relaxed by it - I wish he was still small enough to do it now as he never relaxes any more!

dd1 we would sit her on my knee with my hand under her chin and pat/rub her back.

dd2 hated the above, she would only be winded by laying across my knees on her stomach whilst i patted/rubbed her back

ds1 same as dd1

dd3 liked to be helped upright against my shoulder but didnt like to be patted.

ds2 anyway I decided he was going to be winded, a very very easy going baby

dd4 I hold her upright after a feed again my shoulder, i dont pat/rub.

ruddynorah · 30/01/2010 13:24

i just sit ds up after his feed and rock him a bit. he is bf. not very windy.

eggontoast · 30/01/2010 16:07

I ask because babe not usually windy unless let down really fast and she has to gulp to keep up. Also she is in harness for clicky hip which has caused her problems with wind. I sometimes struggle to get it up so thought I'd check what others think. Sitting her up on my knee and rocking is a good one.

If you are Micky Mouse then you put them over your shoulder and sing "top, top, bottom, bottom, middle, midle, middle" while patting the shoulders, bum and middle of the back until Baby Goofy belches.

Sorry have seen to much MM Clubhouse, my rain is turning to mush.
