Help! Really painful - thrush?

DS is 8 weeks old. From about two weeks (possibly earlier) he had thrush in his mouth and I had it on my nipples. We didn't get treated straight away (reluctant GP) but it's been cleared up in his mouth and - by the looks of it- on my nipples for about 3 weeks.

But, I am still in lots of pain feeding. I get nipple vasospasm after feeding which is extremely painful - a searing pain which feels like it is burning a hole from my nipple to my back. It's also sore while feeding, but far more so when I don't get time to recover from the last feed.

I thought this was from thrush. Before the thrush set in I only had pain feeding on one side, while I was getting latch sorted; now it hurts on both. But can this still be a symptom of thrush now, even though all the other symptoms have gone? Should I be using the anti-fungal cream, even though there is no sign of thrush on the nipple, or is it more likely to be internal?

I mentioned it to a GP at my 6 week check 2 weeks ago and she said she wouldn't give me any other treatment as it might not be thrush - but she didn't offer any other help.

I've BF'd successfully before and the position looks fine.

It's all starting to really upset me. Last time I found it such a bonding experience and now I dread every feed.

I'm no expert but could be thrush affecting you internally in your milk ducts. Maybe ring breastfeeding support lines or go back to your doctor. Have you any cracks on your nipples? I had a similar pain that I thinks was due to cracked nipples that went away after using lansinoh.

I am really no expert, but have been looking up thrush info on the net as I suspect myself and DD may have it.
I thought this website was good - and it suggests the thrush can go into the ducts which makes it much more painful? Maybe you need more treatment??
breastfeeding.hypermart.net/thrush.html
Can't mastitis and blocked ducts also give shooting pains? Have you tried helplines? Your GP doesn't sound very helpful?
