Does anyone else get a wave of nausea when the baby latches on?

Because I do and I have never ever heard anyone else mention this.
This time round (3rd child, nearly 4 months old) I have had a very easy time with breastfeeding - no pain since the first week or two, never had any problems with mastitis or thrush or anything like that.
It's not a huge issue at all, just one of those weird things - specially when I feed just before dinner as I always find myself thinking 'Oh dear, I don't really fancy whatever it is I'm having for dinner today' then I remember it's just because I'm feeding and then it goes away after a minute or two.
Am I weird?!

If you are then i am too, this happened to me with all three of mine, everyone kept on about how BFing made them ravenous, it took me a good 30mins after feeding to actually feel like eating which was interesting in the early days.

That's two of us then Tamarto!
Anyone else?

In the first couple of weeks I felt really dizzy and disoriented when breastfeeding but it went away after that. I think there's some kind of hormone so maybe it's that?

MamaArwen · 28/01/2010 22:01

I've not actually experienced it myself, but it's called D-Mer (Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex). You can google it. It's uncommon but not unheard of.

Tamarto · 28/01/2010 22:34

'D-MER is not nausea with letdown or any other isolated physical manifestation.'

found when googling it, seems that isn't what it is, unless you feel really down at the same time, i just felt sick.

AuroraB · 29/01/2010 13:15

I had this too, quite badly for the first few weeks and still from time to time feel a bit queazy at the start of a feed (DS is 7 months). mentioned it to HV in the early days and she said it was a hormonal rush thing, but as she also diagnosed Ds with 'a chill' when he had an upset tummy i'm sure i believe her

IWishIWasAFrog · 29/01/2010 14:01

Me too, lasts only a few seconds, 10 at most, but quite intense, as if I will be dick right that instant. Thought it was only me

IWishIWasAFrog · 29/01/2010 14:01

that should be 'sick' no dicks here!

How interesting.
I used to get a slight sense of ill-being (as opposed to well-being) on letdown too - maybe that was the D-Mer thing.

Me, too- sort of depressed/ panicked feeling just before letdown!
Always wondered...

BigWeeHag · 29/01/2010 16:39

I had that! The panic I mean! Never ever heard anyone else admit to it, that's amazing! I thought it was because with no. 3 if I sat down I had 434324324 other things to be doing, and that was causing anxiety, but I did notice it was very much linked to letdown. Wow. I feel all warm and not-alone now!

Definately had the feeling sick feeling. Knew i wasn't actually going to throw up just couldn't eat anything for a while after on take sips of water. It must be the only time in my life when i've been off food!!!

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 30/01/2010 21:15

I think you may have low blood sugar- have you tried eating something small before hand and having a glass of water? I'm sure it will make the nausea go away. You should be eating small regular meals if you want to keep your blood-sugar level stable, moreso whilst you are breastfeeding as it takes a lot out of you.

I felt nauseated when DS would latch on but couldn't find any mention of it in any of the breastfeeding literature or on the web. No one I knew had experienced it either so I'm curious to see some other women do. It did mean that I lost my appetite for much of the first year (it went away after that), so I ended up half a stone thinner than before pregnancy. I think it must be hormonal or related to blood sugar, it happened regardless of my mood or thoughts.
