I've decided to restart breast feeding

So DS is nearly 6weeks old and I stopped BF when He was just over a week old as I got scared my the midwife as he lost 10% of his body weight. She told me it was better to stop all together than top up with formula.

Any way 4 weeks later I am really missing BF. I still had a little milk when I squeezed my nipple so I put DS on and he started sucking really well.

I started yesterday putting him on the breast before every feed, he will do 15mins each side and when he went to bed at 7 I pumped every hour for 10mins each side. Its only a manual pump and got about 5mls each side.

I got some fenugreek this morning so I have started on them, They are horrible things but if they work I'll be happy.

Does anybody know if I can do anything else and do you know how long it will take before I can expect to notice a difference.

Not something I have experience of but just wanted to say good luck and that I'm filled with admiration for you! As much breast stimulation by your baby (as well as the pump, although babies are much better at it) as possible, I'd say- at night as well, when your hormone levels are higher. Best of luck!

has anybody had any experiance with this?

Try googling googe sp? she was doing it a month or 2 ago

Pannacotta · 28/01/2010 16:47

I haven't done it myself (ie stopped and started again) but I think I have seen threads about this on here.

Have you done an archive search?

Your MW was very remiss in what she said to you...

DrivenToDistraction · 28/01/2010 16:55

I've no experience myself but it's certainly possible to restart BF (and even after a much longer break than you've had AFAIK). Relactation is what you need to search for in the MN archive, I know there are women here who have succeeded! Hopfully someone with experience will be along soon.

It sounds like your in with a damn good chance of if working, considering DS is latching well. Good on you! I'm so with your midwife for giving you such shockingly bad advice and scaring you like that . Good luck, you can do it!

Also, have a look at kellymom, it's an excellent site.

Congratulations! My doula breastfed a baby her daughter had surrogated for her. She claimed she did it all with herbs (I assume fenugreek) but there are prescription medicines available if you need a boost (domperidone and reglan are the ones I've heard of but don't know about UK availability).

A supplemental feeding system is also a possibility (a small tube that feeds the baby as he latches on to you, so he gets used to feeding that way) - I don't know the pro's and con's of this though so someone more experienced will probably be along.

thanks for the feedback

i tried a search and found a few threads but I couldnt see any where the person reported back as to how she got on.

I am just interested as to how other people found it and how long I should expect it to take. I know its not going to be an overnight thing, I'm thinking 2-3 weeks or is that being a bit optermistic??

at the min ds is going 3-31/2 hours between feeds, should I try to express between this?? and do you think letting him nurse 15mins each side is long enough?

Don't have any advice, but know a health visitor help a mum to start breastfeeding again after a long break (not sure how long).

Well done you though, good luck!

DrivenToDistraction · 28/01/2010 19:15

Have a look at the kellymom page I linked to earlier, there is loads of information there about how best to do it

NotQuiteCockney · 28/01/2010 19:23

If you call the BFN/NCT/LLL/ABM they will help you with this. If he is sucking well, then 15 minutes per side is probably enough. Are you latching him on at night too? Nighttime feeds do the most for your supply.

I think it would be wise for you to find some local BF support, get your latch checked, and just get some help.

Pannacotta · 28/01/2010 19:34

Sorry I cant help with specifics either though it does sound like you are doing really well and I'd guess that 2-3 weeks woudl be about right. I also agree about feeding (or expressing at night), that is key to getting supply established (to do with hormones I think).

I do second the advice to look on kellymom.
I am a long term breastfeeder and whenever I have had any problems I always look on kellymom.

Good luck!

would you be prepared to try some manual stimulation ?- thye say it is very effective. it incresded my supply.
they do say that nothing stimulates supply, like a baby themselves. thats why they advocate putting baby onto the breast as much as poss. and they do say that pumping alone will not keep supply going.

but this method, is highly regarded, to actually stimulate supply 'MORE'/ further.
this method is a REAL kerfuffle. BUT, you only need to do it twice. Say once, when you are relaxed, have a bit of time( yeah, like when does that happen), say evening, 8pm. Then again the next day, say mid morning, or mid afternoon.
It may take a day or so, to see results, but generally the results are VERY significant, thus worth it.
It is basically manually expressing. Have you manually expressed before ? If not I will try and explain it in simplistic terms.
You will need a tiny cup, or small bottle, to catch any drops of milk. You will get some. Becasue basically it is a method of manually expressing, so you are supposed to get some milk.

It is based on treating the nipple like segments of an orange, and each segment gets stimulated.
Or think of the nipple like a clock. and you go around stimulating each, 5 mintes.

So, use your thumb and forefinger. put thumb on top of areola, where the brown part meets the pink of your breast. put it there at the number 12 on a clock. Now place your forefinger on the bottom half of your areola, where the outer part of your brown nipple, meets the pink part of your breast. Put the forefinger there, on the number 6. Now squeeze gently. and hold for the count of 2. release and do it agian. do it for as many times as you can be bothered, ideally 20.
Then you move round the clock, Thumb on number 11, finger on number 5.
so you do 6 o'clock, 5 to 5, 10 to 4, quarter to 3, you may like to change hands here and use the other hand, or swap thumb and forfinger. And you work your way round, all of the clock, as it were.

On some of the squeezes you will get drops of milk. on others you get nothing.do not fret.

It does take a bit of time. and it is a total pain. but it is very very effective.
Claire kedves who is the breast feeding expert at Kings College hospital, and nationally recognised figure, gave me this advice, amongst other helpful hints.said to manuaaly stimulate and then to use an lectric pump, for a few minutes.

she says that if you do it twice, you will notice a signiciant difference within 24 hrs.

I think your exepctation of it taking a couple of weeks is more tha n reasonable.

HTH

I think I remember someone successfully relactating on this, the thread was called "I'm in the seventh circle of breastfeeding hell" or something like that...

It's impressive stuff!

TruthSweet · 28/01/2010 22:03

The fenugreek needs to be taken in what feels like a massive amount - 4 x 640mg capsules three times a day (12 in all). If it is working you will STINK of maple syrup (wee, sweat, milk, everything) and so will baby if baby is getting milk from you.

I have probably told my fenugreek story umpteen times so apologies for brevity DD1 mainly ffed with some ex.bm and a few bfeds from birth until 7 weeks, started fenugreek and went from DD to F cup in 48 hours, loads more milk than ever before and kicked the bottles by 8 weeks.

Here is a Kellymom link that shows the dosage levels for fenugreek and also has the contra-indication/drug interactions. I have asthma but as the powder is in a capsule and the contra-indication is to do with inhaling the powder
I felt safe ignoring that one .

You need to be feeding/pumping at least 8 times a day including once overnight. Kellymom has yet more good advice on relactating here

StealthPolarBear · 29/01/2010 08:20

How did it go? I'm also full of admiration - after all your baby has already had loads of colostrum and now you might be able to bf as well
