How quickly does Gaviscon work?

The little monkey has just been prescribed Gaviscon for possible silent reflux (or maybe plain old wind, though Infacol is not working). He's just had his first dose, though admittedly a lot went down his chin.

Does anyone have experience of using Gaviscon? Did it do the trick immediately, or did it take a few doses?

Grateful for your experience on this.

I take gaviscon for indigestion myself and as you as you get a good mouthful, I just drink out of bottle, the effect should be almost instantaneous, basically as soon as you swallow it, it soothes the burning.
Assume is the same with babies.
It doesn't taste very nice, the adult one doesn't anyway, so guess you would have to try to get as much of it in him as possible!!

Hope that helps!
Also, the effect doesn't always last very long, so I find if heartburn is bad, may have to take more than one dose... Difficult to know unless you can see that he is upset and you give it to him and it makes no difference...

DD had gaviscon for silent reflux. It started working quickly (we used an oral syringe to get it in) but was only effective for a couple of weeks, at which point she was put on ranitidine and domperidone. She's now 9mo and not on anything. Good luck!

Just finished second day of infant gaviscon with 3 month old ds who has suspected silent reflux.

Struggled to get it down him too, as breast fed and won't take a bottle.

Have been giving it to him on a calpol spoon and he has started to take it better. I give it to him before a feed. Still a bit unsettled, but did only wake up once last night.

We also raised one end of the cot, so that he wasn't lying completely flat. This could have helped also.

Fed well today and seemed much calmer. However, had lots of screaming about 4pm today for 20 minutes, promptly followed by quite a solid poo! So it looks like pain may be caused on the other end. Although, must be getting more gaviscon down him than I thought!

Will give it another couple of days if no further improvement will go back to GP on Monday.

Hope this helps.

We've just done our first week of infant gaviscon with our 3 month old.

It worked from the first dose with us though I was told by a HV that it may take a few days.

We combination feed so have been putting it in her bottles and it goes down fine (and stays down fine at last!). I did try it after a breast feed mixed with water in a bottle but she brought most of it up! I suspect that might be more to do with the water straight after a feed though.
She doesn't seem to need it so much after a breast feed if she's had a bottle earlier in the day but I would consider using a medicine dropper syringe if I did have to start using it after breast feeding.

Solid poo? Yikes.

Well, I resorted to the pipette from a bottle of Infacol after the monkey refused a bottle top up after his evening feed, and have raised the end of his cot up. He did seem to go down for the night with a bit less shrieking than usual, but perhaps that was just because he was tired from playing with the bottle for about half an hour.

Thanks for the tips all, we'll see how he goes.
