breastfeeding mums shouldn't eat chocolate...

Saw this rubbish advice on the Politics of Breastfeeding Facebook page and thought it deserved a wider audience. Some of the advice is bizarre! I don't think I would have coped the first few weeks of establishing bf if I hadn't eaten a box of chocs a week! I don't understand why a website such as this even needs to wade into the breastfeeding versus bottlefeeding debate.

Ooops, that looks a bit like I think the Politics of Breastfeeding Facebook page is giving rubbish advice. It isn't! A member of the group posted a link to an unrelated website with the rubbish advice.

Wow that's really bad!

CrosswordGeek · 26/01/2010 16:18

What a load of shit.

Particularly hate the picture of baby feeding itself the bottle.

Love the bit at the bottom about "If you choose to bottle feed, be sure that you purchase baby formula, rather than attempting to feed a homemade recipe."

I'm suprised there isn't a huge advert for formula next to it :/

l39 · 26/01/2010 16:53

"Formula feeding mums do not have to concern themselves with how their diet will impact their baby's meals, so they are free to eat whatever they choose."

Oh they don't have an agenda at all!

How have my five children lived when I've recklessly been eating whatever I chose while breastfeeding? Just like those carefree formula feeders, only I haven't had to use up all the calories on my own...

l39 · 26/01/2010 16:55

And the dig at twin mums. Right, it's impossible to exclusively breastfeed twins!

Lucky you Oct there were many things that upset one of my twins chocolate, oranges, anything spicy when breast feeding.

Chutes you really must be bored if you need to start a thread berating this link. It gave a comprehensive list of reasons to breast feed so no hidden agenda methinks.

A baby holding it's own bottle now and again is nothing to "hate",mine did when I was up to my eyes in caring for my 3 under 18 months. They had loads of cuddles and feeds with me but they also liked to hold their own bottle occasionally. I have a friend with a baby who has only ever had breastmilk and water in a cup. He held his own cup as soon as he could so what is the problem with babies holding their own bottle now and again?

139 glad you exclusively bf your twins I, my sister,my best friend and several other friends with twins all struggled so ff was a godsend for all of us. It's not impossible to bf twins exclusively but it is a great deal harder(having bfed twins and a singleton I think I'm qualified to comment).

And what's wrong with saying don't make your own?As unpalatable as it is for you, there is a need for formula-home made formula would be highly dangerous. Not exactly criminal to point this out is it.

Storm in a teacup thread.

apsie · 26/01/2010 17:27

Can't say my ds had any objection to me eating chocolate while I was bf - could be why he's partial to it now though?

StealthPolarBear · 26/01/2010 17:34

eating chocolate makes your milk chocolatey,, didn't you know? And what kind of feckless mum would feed her baby chocolate milk? Much better with a nice formula where you know exactly what's in it.

ChutesTooNarrow · 26/01/2010 18:17

Nope, not bored MilaMae. This website has incorrect breastfeeding advice. Nothing to do with how you choose to feed your kids. I would hate to think any baby missed out on its mum's milk because of bad advice on a website. I don't see why they need to have the info on that site really, and I have e-mailed them to suggest they link to a site such as the NHS instead of making up their own advice.

Haven't looked at link - but one question - how exactly would you go about making your own formula??

weegiemum · 26/01/2010 21:40

Isn't necking down as much chocolate as you can judiciously sampling organic chocolate one of the benefits of breastfeeding?

It was for me!

wastingaway · 26/01/2010 21:41

Cook and dilute cows milk I believe. That's what was done before commercial formula milk was available.

verylittlecarrot · 26/01/2010 23:45

Oh yes, mothers who give their babies breastmilk must be dreadfully careful about their diet.

Obviously.

Just as the cows that produce the formula milk are fastidious about the grass/nettles/dandelions/poo/creepy crawly bugs/artificial hormones/reconstituted animal feed that they ingest.

What on earth do people imagine the diet of the dairy cows consists of that it could possibly be superior to a human diet? Don't people even think about this nonsensical argument?

MilaMae; interesting stance on the homemade formula. I'd be very inclined to make my own formula if I needed to ff, rather than buy highly processed commercial formula. At least then I'd be better able to veto the suspect untested ingredients (fish eyes, algae derived products, 'pre-biotics').

BertieBotts · 26/01/2010 23:54

The main thing I notice about that website is it has this advert on it: "1 Tip of a Tiny Belly" - I keep seeing it everywhere, what is it? And what is up with that grammar?? I clicked on it once by accident and it went to a page which started talking to me, lol.

But erm, yes, that advice is quite shocking. I get angry about the diet advice because I think it's one of the biggest myths out there. Excepting babies who have a sensitivity to foods the mum consumes of course, which is a different thing entirely.

StealthPolarBear · 27/01/2010 12:18

i keep seeing that too BB!! why?
Yes, i agree, some babies are sensitive to stuff in the milk, I have no doubt and there's nothing wrong with trial and error if the baby seems unsettled...erm, like mine...might be all the chocolate??? No, bound to be the organic ryvita i had the other day but this sort of thing and the sure start thing i mentioned just perpetuates the myth that bf is difficult, you have to be so careful and if you eat a tuna sandwich the next feed is fishy. or whatever.

alana39 · 27/01/2010 13:49

I have been practically living on chocolate for first 10 weeks of bf. Stopped abruptly on Monday and guess what, DS3 now has a cold. Clearly due to removal of chocolate protection and will start again as soon as I can get to the shops.

SpeedyGonzalez · 27/01/2010 13:53

They clearly didn't consult any lactation consultants before writing that article. What a load of old chocolate bollocks.

Morloth · 27/01/2010 21:49

DS spent the first six months of his life with bits of chocolate melting in his hair. The less said about the red wine stain that he wore for a bit the better...
