Feeding a baby with a blocked nose?

roslily · 25/01/2010 23:09

My ds seems to have blocked nose. I have managed to get a bit into him- he is bottle fed, but it was hard work for both of us.

Is there a trick? Something i can get for him?

I usually put a little vicks vapour rub on a tissue in my sleeve or somewhere close to babies with blocked noses while feeding. I also had a little nasal syringe that sucked snot out of little blocked noses (they all hated it but it worked very nicely). You might be able to use a saline drop product to help with the blocked nose, but usually babies hate having their noses interfered with and shooting saline liquid up a little nose has to be unpleasant for them.

It isn't pleasant you're right but I did find nasosal worked (can get it in boots). 5 mins after I'd squirted it up her nose there was a huge and very explosive sneeze

I used saline drops too. He hated them but they seemed to do the trick. Nasosal or whatever generic brand is cheapest - I think all saline is created equal. Used several brands and never saw a difference. Just got whichever one the chemist sold me!

Oh yes saline drops are by far the best - it's about 30p from boots pharmacist. I thought it was nicer than those pump things you can buy.

Also, try putting him near sunlight (yeah right!) or a bright light for a few seconds. This can bring on the sneezing reflex which might clear his nose for a while.

I found the plug-in karvol things best for my DS when he's got a cold

I used this Nasal Aspirator from Boots. (AKA Snot Sucker )

You can't over-suck, so it won't hurt the baby, plus you can't get the snot in your own mouth!

Tis brill.
