Self-weaning at five months?

McSnail · 25/01/2010 16:40

Recently my baby seems sooooo dis-interested in the boob and keeps jerking her head off, only staying on for a minute at a time, thrashing about and crying.
Is five months too early for self-weaning? We haven't even introduced her to solids yet!

Could she be distracted by stuff going on around her? Does it happen during night feeds?

olivo · 25/01/2010 19:21

mcsnail, my dd is also 5 mo and i am having this problem. she is on and off, but not at night so now, when at all possible, i take her to the most quiet, boring place to feed during the day. i hold her hand too as otherwise, she is too busy grabbing at buttons or collars or whatever too.

"it's just a phase"....

Perhaps she's teething?

WoTmania · 25/01/2010 20:58

I found all 3 of mine became very distractable at this age. The world sudden;y becomes a lot more interesting and my nipple used to get jerked all over the place (ouch!). I just amde sure that we didn't go out all day everyday but spent at least a morning or afternoon in. But I've also spent many a time in acfes holding a baby to me forcibly.

Thanks for replies.

Maybe she's distracted by other things, and yes I think she's definitely teething.

It' so exhausting.

Saying that, she's been a thrasher from about a month old - a really 'fretty' feeder. I think I've aged about ten years, just from BFing.

I'll guilt her out with it when she's a teenager.

Have you seen a bf counsellor/lactation consultant? They can sometimes make good suggestions. The one I saw at when dd was 6 months old identified a tongue-tie. Dd has always been a fussy feeder but it got worse at 5 months and her weight gain suffered as a result. Might be worth checking out her mouth - teething, thrush, tongue tie can all affect feeding. Though it is equally likely that a sudden interest in the world is making her distracted. Very frustrating - I agree.
