When breastfeeding twins, you have to give some formula to begin with. Just until your milk comes in though.

If a breastfeeding mum needs to give a top up of formula, it is important to put the baby to the breast first, then offer the formula. If the baby then drinks more than half an ounce of formula, the mother needs to think about her diet and how much she is drinking.

It is FINE to wean at 16 weeks, mothers know their babies best. Anyway the guidelines are about to be changed back to four months.

It was all most odd. I felt like I had fallen into some kind of parallel universe.

NCT trains trainers to run breastfeeding peer support. Just because someone is a breastfeeding counsellor does not mean she is trained to deliver peer support - there is a separate training for this. Antenatal teachers are not qualified to run breastfeeding peer support.

So it's perfectly possible there was no one locally available to do it.

thanks tiktok

I will address the concerns with the midwife myself, I will also contact the national co-ordinator and I will try and get confirmation that the weaning guidelines are not about to change.

OMG! I was a bf peer supporter, trained by Unicef Baby Friendly Initiative 3 yrs ago in association with my local NCT branch and I'm amazed, shocked and dumbfounded at what the midwife has been telling you.
Could you contact the Unicef Baby Friendly Initiative perhaps? See if they can get a trainer to come and see you?

Well, I can assure you that non of her 'advice' is part of a midwife's training these days - well not at my University or hospital anyway!

That's AWFUL about the twins = formula. I can recommend the LLL course which I did - no mention of any such nonsense.

This is definately incorrect. I would ask for her evidence and research because afayk it's against DH guidelines. Contact the LC!!

Humphrey Cobbler - is it possible for you to let me know more details: where this course is and who leads it? I am part of the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers central committee and one of our committee is very active in Wales (and has been awarded an MBE for her services to infant feeding) and would like to take this to a higher level, but needs to know the details.

If you are not happy putting them on here, you can email me [email protected]

Have emailed you IlanaK
