How many bfs for a 6 month old?

I know it varies depending on how much milk produced/taken but dd is not feeding very well during the day (feeds well at night).
Good feeds = 7pm, midnight, 4am, 8am (ish)
All the ones after that are rubbish. DD constantly pulls off then tries to relatch, only to pull off again. I feel like I'm trying to catch up with her feeds all day. She has started weaning but is not having much yet.

Maybe your milk quality is better at night due to sleeping/ resting between feeds?

Sometimes if tired in the day, not getting round to eating regularly and drinking or just running around too much can reduce supply a bit in my experience with my two little ones. Or maybe there are far more interesting things to look at/ do than feed in the day

I wouldn't worry too much, if weaning is only early days though, just go with the flow

Thanks I do eat regularly and drink fluids but I am tired in the day due to waking at night. Still, most mothers would be if their babies feed during the night - so wouldn't have thought that would affect my milk too much. I think it's more the latter explanation - but even when I feed her at home in the same chair I feed her in at night (where she feeds so well), it's still a fussy feed. Will see what her weight gain is like tomorrow. If ok, will just stop worrying about I think.

I think she'll settle nicely as weaning continues. You could try teething gel before a feed, in case it's her teeth bothering her?

ladylush · 24/01/2010 20:13

Do you think? Hope so. Teething gel at beginning of each feed is a good idea. I apply it throughout the day but will start doing it b4 I start bf. I just did 2 daytime feeds today. So input was as follows:
1am: bf (long)
5am: bf (longish)
9ish bf (long)
10:45 sleep
13:00 bf (decent)
14:00 third a jar of apple/pear puree
15:00 sleep
17:00 - still sleeping so woke to bf then dh gave her some banana with rice pudding
18:45 - bath
19:15 bf and left to sleep.

Seems pretty good to me. I'm no expert but that seems good for an almost 6 month old in regards to sleep and wakes at night. My boy wanted feeding every 2-3 hours in the day at this age. So I only followed the nap times on the routine for a 6 month old.

Most little ones don't stop waking for the middle of the night feed until after 9 months, providing they get woken for a feed at 11pm ish.

You're doing well in my opinion. You could dream feed at 11pm every night for now? Might keep them going until 3am and then at least you know you can go to sleep after the 11pm feed for a while before the middle of the night feed? But bonjela or equivalent before a feed may help if the gums are sore as mentioned.

Maybe someone else will have an idea for you though..

Thanks Weigh day today so we'll see if she is getting enough milk. Didn't realise they don't usually sleep through til 9 months. Amazing how you forget everything when you have a much older dc (5 yr gap) - thank goodness for mumsnet How is everything with your lo?

FF babies do often sleep through sooner but to be honest, why would you as a mum be that selfish by FF baby just to sleep better? BF is so much better for them. You're doing great. Fingers crossed the weigh in goes well.

Have you looked on kellymom?

ladylush · 25/01/2010 11:36

I have to confess to being v tempted to give her occasional ff at night just so my h and I can go out (would express but can't get more than 20 ml at the moment)- but ff or ebm is irrelevant as dd won't take a bottle. This is despite 10 weeks of being fed ebm - as premature.

Oh and yes I have looked at kellymom site but a while ago - and for storage of bm rather than development stuff. Will go and have another peek

teaandcake just popped back to say dd put on 8oz in a week. Very happy with that

You see you're doing great! Believe in yourself.

As weaning continues the BF's will adjust accordingly, no rush.

Thanks
