The Unbearable Tightness of BFing (or how to break an unbreakable latch )

DD2 is 9 months old, a lovely girl but a horrible, horrible sleeper.Up every two hours, howling til she's fed horrible.(Not that I can endure more than a few minutes before giving in - we have a toddler, neighbours, nerves.) We're trying The No Cry Sleep Solution but I've kind of fallen at the first hurdle - the book keeps saying "remove the baby from the breast" before they fall asleep as if it was the easiest thing in the world, but any attempt to break my daughter's latch ends up in a hideous toothy wrangle for my nipple. I thought I had the technique down okay - little finger in corner of mouth, wiggle til seal is broken, but it's like a gum fortress in there. I don't want to hurt her - or me (I should mention she has 4 teeth, more on the way and I am already nursing a painful bite on one side.) Any other techniques for removal? Any tips? (I've seen the biting threads - bringing her in close doesn't seem to work; calling her name worked twice, then resulted in the kind of movement you would make if you were trying to strip wire with your teeth.) Thanks!

I wet my finger, wiggle it in the side of baby's mouth and actually get in between the gums (jaw). That usually works.

I hope someone else comes along with more advice.

OUCH on the bite!!! I've had one or two.... gah!!!!

(Love your thread title BTW)

Thanks, Jacksmama! Hadn't thought of wetting my finger to make it less uncomfortable for her (and therefore less bitey)...

You're welcome!

Any better today?

Yes, actually - wet finger plus slightly different angle seems to have removed her with a bit less pain/struggle on either side. It's still a bit nerve-wracking though! I'm just waiting to feel the razor-sharp tooth clamp down. Now, to sort out the sleeping...
