breastfeeding baby being sick after feeds

DS has a virus, or had one. Over 2 weeks now. He is now absolutely fine in himself, no fever, no signs of illness apart from a horrid cough and stuffy nose.

Now, the problem i have with this virus/cold/snotty nose causing him to be sick is that he is only ever sick after a feed.

He is fine, no cough, no wheezing, no gurgling. He feeds, and during and then after the feed for up to an hour or so he gets fulls of mucous, and after the feed he starts to cough/choke and eventually vomits his feed, and then some mucous. Not after all feeds. Although he does cough/choke and get snotty after all feeds. And he wheezes and is clearly distressed for a short while. After he has seemingly cleared his airways he is back to normal and if you see him then you would not beleive he even had a cough or snot, apart from perhaps the remnants of snotty nose.

So, what I am wondering is, could this vomitting and mucous be linked somehow to my breastmilk? I don't know, mucous can be increased through diary so i was thinking at first that, but it only started at the same time as the bug he got (unless it was not a bug at all ), or something else i might be eating that could be affecting him?

Saw GP yesterday who said i need to just ride it out with him, his body is doing what it needs to and his lings are lovely and clear.

Just wondered if there could be another cause, as he has got better from whatever bug it was, got better straight away, then this started...

Can you suction his nose and drop in some bm to help with the snot before and again after a feed?

PavlovtheCat · 12/01/2010 22:42

I need to buy a suction, will do that tomorrow. The nose itself is for the most part clear to see, every now and then he gets snot there, and once he is sick he is snotty everywhere, but, for example right now. He has just fed, is wheezing like an old man in his chest/throat but his nose is fine.
I do have saline nasal drops to give him 15 mins before alternate feeds, helped a bit guess...not much. I did not think of EBM, i shall do that, thanks!

Had this exact same problem with DD a couple of weeks ago - she'd feed, then start coughing after her feed, make this really horrible deep wretching noise then bring up lots of mucousy milk. Took her to Docs who said same as yours has - just ride it out!

Lasted about 7 days (throwing up after perhaps 3 feeds a day) then stopped as suddenly as it had started. The last time she was sick she brought up a huge glob of mucous, then no more after that.

Really don't think it's anything to do with your milk - just lots of mucous collecting and no other way of expelling it (apart from the delightful nappies of course!)

She didn't gain as much weight as usual over the fortnight she was unwell but that's to be expected really.

Noticed today she's coming down with another cold so got it all to look forward to again... If we decide to have another DC I think we'll have to try to avoid another winter born

PavlovtheCat · 12/01/2010 23:04

oh that is reassuring to hear kitty, not that i want him to be poorly with a cough and mucous, but if its not my milk i can sigh with releif, just panicking i think as he is doing so well with his feeding i sort of worry its all to good to be true (DD was low birth weight and we had a stressful time bf'ing her, although that was down to hv rather than DD, but did not know that until much later and DS is now feeding wonderfully).

I shall 'ride it out' then as gp says, not that she minds me being there every 5 mins, she wanted to see DS yesterday!

oh sorry meant to say, hope your DD gets well again soon and its not too bad this time.

Pavlov - I know how worrying it all is! When DD first vomited I had a total panic, and when it kept happening I was imagining all kinds of awful things - My DS never threw up - in fact he's almost 3 now and I could probably count on one hand the number of times he has.

Really hoping DDs cold isn't too bad this time as from the looks of the snowfall here this evening we may all be stuck in the house for a few days. It's not so bad taking care of a sicky baby when the other one can get to nursery a few days a week, but I imagine it'll be a bit of a nightmare if we're all housebound...

PavlovtheCat · 12/01/2010 23:20

mrskitty dd was the same. she never even had spitup. When she vomitted, on the rare occasions she has done so, she did it with style...proper alien across the room style! I would say...5 times? So on one hand too, just! She is 3.5. She was born in the summer and did not get her first cold until just before christmas when she was just under 6 months old.

OMG the weirdest thing has just happened DS was feeding, feeding, feeding as he has done for a couple of hours. Normal for him this time of an evening. So, I sort of presumed my milk was almost dry by now, he was comfort feeding i guessed, or building up my supply as he is 6wks. Either way, he is due to pass out full of milk any time soon and my boobs are meant to be empty. He just took he mouth away, only for my nipple to leak a little, so i squeezed it gently to see if it was from him or my nipple and it squirted milk right up his nose . I was just wondering how i was going to get bm into his nose this time of night with a dry milkbar! Answered that!
how bizarre?!

My dd2, 6 months, has a cold atm with a streaming nose and is struggling breathing while she is bfing because of it.

Just reading this thread and had never realised that putting BM in the nose can help. How does that work? Have you found this to be succesful then Mooching..?

Hope things improve for you & your LOs soon Pavlov and Kitty

PavlovtheCat · 13/01/2010 00:00

mamamimi its not nice is it? the children being poorly hope your little one recovers soon too.

BM is the elixir for everything i completely forgot about it being good for noses. It has antiseptic? or something in it, i do not know the medical reason, other than it is great or healing sore/cracked/bitten nipples, sticky eyes in babies and also for conjunctivitis in adults, also good for spots and other stuff too.

MoochingNoshingPondering · 14/01/2010 13:39

BM has antibodies in it so great for sore nipples, sticky eyes, stuffy noses, nappy rash, excema patches theory is it can't hurt and may well help.

Well Done Pavlov how is DS now?

PavlovtheCat · 14/01/2010 20:44

He is still bunged up, and vomits after some feeds. Much better, but horribly clogged after all feeds still. But even with all the yuckiness he is such a happy little boy! so it cant be that bad

thank you for asking x
