Thanks again to all the wonderful mumsnetters who replied to my last post - this one is a suplimentary which should allow for both venting of spleens and singing of praises!

Who gave you or where did you find the best breast feeding advice/help?

Best - tiktok on here
Worst - Tracey Hogg (baby whisperer book) and midwife

Hopefully · 12/01/2010 20:50

Best: TikTok and BFing boards in general
Worst: Gina Ford book

shonaspurtle · 12/01/2010 20:51

The best advice was from the NHS breastfeeding counsellors at my local bf clinic because it was face to face & hands on which for me & my problems beat all the excellent advice I read about online.

The worst advice, I don't know really, I was pretty clued up in advance so I knew what to take with a pinch of salt. Probably advice from my mother & grandmother as it was out of date re: 4 hourly feeding and limiting the time per side.

GhoulsAreLoud · 12/01/2010 20:52

Best - Mumsnet

Worst - Health Visitor (oh, I could tell you some stories about the 'policy' she made up about replacing breastfeeds with formula feeds)

thisisyesterday · 12/01/2010 20:52

best- local la leche league group, and local baby cafe (run by the founders, julie williams and catherine pardoe- fab ladies!)

worst- hospital after having ds1

ruddynorah · 12/01/2010 20:57

best- mumsnet (hunker and tiktok) and 'bestfeeding' as rec. by my midwife

worst- MIL ie she needs water, is it time to wean yet, etc.

StealthPolarBear · 12/01/2010 21:00

best - MN and NCT group

StealthPolarBear · 12/01/2010 21:00

devilsadvocaat · 12/01/2010 21:01

best - my community midwife

worst - dmum's advice, just a bit out of date really

TheCrackFox · 12/01/2010 21:03

Best - Mumsnet

worst - MW

Feenie · 12/01/2010 21:07

Best - Mumsnet/Tiktok/Hunkermunker

Worst - Mum/Tracey Hogg

ruddynorah · 12/01/2010 21:07

gosh yes i remember watching baby whisperer on tv going on at a new mum about how she must eat high protein snacks like sliced eggs and turkey to make good quality milk, and must empty each breast after a feed or the remaining milk would turn into cottage cheese

hazeyjane · 12/01/2010 21:08

Best - one MW that I saw with dd2 (was put off Mumsnet at the time by a thread that upset me - wish I had carried on Mumsnetting for advice!)

Worst - everyone else (inc MW, NHS Bfeeding adviser, HV, NCT bfc)

Best is nct breastfeeding helpline, sister in law and breastfeeding forums
worst from hv who advised when dd was fussing around at the breast to take her out for a walk...I gave the nct bf councillor exactly the same info and she advised I might have a quick let down and some methods to try....problem solved.

cassell · 12/01/2010 21:16

best: bf counsellor on the post natal ward & mumsnet

worst: books/hv that say babies should only need to feed every 3/4/whatever hours

Galena · 12/01/2010 21:16

Best: Nurses in SCBU, HV, friend

Worst: No-one really... Although when I wanted to move to mixed feeding, the BFC at my breastfeeding group was AWFUL!

hormonesnomore · 12/01/2010 21:22

Best - my best friend & la leche league counsellor who diagnosed and advised on a very sudden let-down which almost drowned ds!

Worst - a midwife who grabbed my nipple, squeezed it and said "see you've got plenty milk - what's the problem?"

jaggythistle · 13/01/2010 16:59

Best - here, other sites, and a lovely midwife on day 5 who really helped. Also 'What Mothers Do...' book, nice to know you're not alone in how you feel.

Worst - MIL ('I've heard xxxxx about bf' - generally inaccurate and gleaned from Daily Mail) and Clare Byam-Cook book (given to me by MIL)

curiositykilledhaskittens · 13/01/2010 17:49

Best - my brilliant mum is the only one who has given consistently good advice. Even if we have disagreed the advice has still been sound. Also neenz on here who really helped by paving the way and being a friendly ear. Have not needed much advice though, more support than advice.

Worst has come from all over the place but mostly from people who have had some breastfeeding training and have decided they know it all and don't need to regularly update their knowledge/keep an open mind and who often have outdated ideas and little or no understanding of physiology/anatomy.

BertieBotts · 13/01/2010 18:12

Best - midwife in hospital, (showed how to feed lying down and tucked baby into sheets "so it won't matter if you fall asleep" and Mumsnet (loads of great advice too much to mention).

Worst - Health Visitors (Advised to supplement at 19 weeks with baby rice due to weight gain slowing. Advised that if I was stressed, busy - what new mum isn't busy?? - and/or not eating that my milk supply and/or quality would suffer. Advised to compress breasts while feeding "to mix the hind and foremilk together"!!!!)

arolf · 13/01/2010 19:06

best - local bf clinic/support group, tiktok and others on mn

worst - not sure - some shitty midwives in hospital, my sister, and my grandmothers have all been negative, but i have ignored them

Taramuddle · 13/01/2010 19:29

Best - busom buddy bfc & books & online

Worst - hvs mws

Casmama · 13/01/2010 22:02

Best - nurses in SCBU and midwifes on the ward who helped me establish breast feeding despite baby being fed by ng tube for 5 days.

Worst - no one really - I researched before he was born so have heard about how things uused to be but noone offered bad advice.

cupcake75 · 14/01/2010 07:54

Best - Community midwives, my mum and Mumsnet

Worst - CBC book (got me stressed right at the beginning when I was trying to get latch sorted), some midwives in hospital (e.g. big baby so you'll have to supplement with formula)
