Really strange advice on stopping bfing

Has anyone else heard this?

I went to see GP about something and while I was there asked for a prescription for something for thrush, as in bf-related.

She was unconvinced that I knew what it was, and considered it was time for me to stop bfing ds (who is getting on a bit now)

She told me to try putting something on my nipple. She said to try coffee, and then if that didnt work, get some bitrex

the stuff you put on your nails to stop biting them, I think it is

Anyway having dismissed this advice out of hand I thought I would share it... seriously would anyone even consider doing this to their child? It think it's vicious.

I'm just that a GP would even suggest this. You shouldn't have to stop bf, surely? I would never do this to my child.

JackiePaper · 12/01/2010 11:07

that is awful i would report that GP, you can make a complaint via the practice. that is terrible terrible advice. she needs to be stopped from saying that to anyone else.

well done you for ignoring her.

god how stupid. I have heard that in some cultures mothers put garlic on their nipples to discourage their child but it seems a bit pointless, given there are much more sensitive ways to wean an older child. Ie bribery .

And I DEFINITELY wouldn't use coffee. What a great way to ensure your child never sleeps again! What does she mean - instant powder or dip your nork into the percolater?!

NotQuiteCockney · 12/01/2010 11:09

I've known women to use mustard powder for this. Doesn't appeal to me, but hey, whatever.

Do you want to stop BF? It's frustrating when HCPs decide 'oh, that's enough bf for you, time to stop, do it this way'. Way to treat their patients as resonsible adults ...

FlightAttendant · 12/01/2010 11:12

I have tried vaguely to stop a few times due to continuing probs with blocked ducts etc

but he won't have normal milk so need some way of getting him to sleep. However am resigned to the fact he'll stop soonish as he is starting to eat much better and teeth are nearly through

I would report it but am new to practice, also I really like her as a GP, so am reluctant to put that in jeopardy.

however it's a moral conflict as I am to think she might tell some other mum who would go ahead and do it.

Are you still struggling with blocked ducts? Do the blocked ducts come and go, or do you have a single remaining lump? Are they generally in the same place (same boob? Same part of same boob)?

Do you want to stop?

FlightAttendant · 12/01/2010 11:17

Hi NQC, not so bad lately but have had thrush instead - which sometimes leads to a blockage iyswim. It varies as to which boob. I do want to stop, I think - but I need a way of getting him to sleep.

That is awful. I weaned my children off by sucking their toes

FlightAttendant · 12/01/2010 11:21

??! Details please!!

gingerkirsty · 12/01/2010 11:22

PMSL @ mrsruffallo - I am 36wks pg so have no knowledge on this subject - am I correct in assuming this is a joke, or is it some amazing technique I haven't heard of?!?!?

experienceofthis · 12/01/2010 11:23

How old is DS?

mrsruffallo · 12/01/2010 11:24

Actually, it's true. Whenever they wanted 'boobie'(usually only at night by the time I weaned) I would suck their toes and they would fall asleep.

FlightAttendant · 12/01/2010 11:25

he is 2yrs and...erm...? how long till June?

[half asleep]

2.7

Mrsruff that is definitely worth a try! As long as have given him a bath first.

I'll give you the standard tips and tricks for blocked duct, in case you've not heard some of it before:

  1. Be v aware of anything pressing against your boobs, particularly during feeding, but generally, too. If you are holding your breast, or part of your bra is pressing against it, particularly during feeding, that can keep that part of your breast from draining properly.
  1. And if you do get a lump, feed with your DS's chin at the lump. This will massage it out. Yes, sometimes you have to feed in stupid positions, at one point DS2 got v keen on me lying down, and him straddling my head ... but it worked.
FlightAttendant · 12/01/2010 11:37

Thankyou, that's helpful to be reminded! i think it usually happens when he has teeth coming through, so just wants a dummy really but won't have a proper one...thus his latch slips esp at night. and this causes build up.

It sounds very funny your ds lying at that angle

I think with blocked ducts the last thing you want to be putting on them is Bitrex or whatever its called.

Its foul stuff.

What wierd advice.... my DD has been using it for 3 years and she still bites her nails.

CarmenSanDiego · 12/01/2010 11:47

Daktarin is great for thrush and if your baby is older, you should use the oral gel on them and the regular stuff on yourself (avoid the Daktarin Gold because it itches like hell and is too strong).

For blocked ducts, try combing the area with a comb, towards the nipple. I found this advice on Mumsnet which sounds mad but worked so well both times I had a blocked duct. After combing and waiting a while, I found a tiny white pinprick dot came up on the nipple. Very lightly poke the dot with a sterilised needle. Just enough to loosen the skin slightly. Feed your baby and magically, the duct unblocks.

tartyhighheels · 12/01/2010 11:48

How on earth can stopping breast feeding help with blocked ducts! The opposite is true and yes, I would report her for this absurd 'advice'. Bitrex! how horrible for the baby and you can take thrush medications whilst still feeding so I fail to see how this is of benefit to you or the babe.

Get in a hot bath, put a hot flannel on the offending lump and give it a heck of a rub. Keep feeding as much as you can. That's what I would do.

Mind you my friend was told just last week that babies recieve no goodness from breastmilk after three months - this was from a female Doctor too, so i guess anything goes!
