DS2 is nearly 15 months and for the last couple of weeks has been really chafing with his top teeth, to the extent that I have sores on the bit round my nipple . Last week only one was affected so I was managing, as he only feeds first and last thing at the minute with the occasional one during the day, but this week it has started on the other boob as well now.

I've tried alll sorts of different positions, latching and relatching him and relatching again, all to no avail. He has had his teeth for ages, so I'm a bit puzzled as to why it could be happening now. The only thing I can think of is that my supply is dwindling and he is working harder at it and chafing?

I don't want to give up as he isn't ready, but I really can't take the pain any more. Any tips greatfully received

get yourself some lasinoh (sp) cream as itis fantastic! I get this from time to time with my 14 month od (and his two brothers prior) but it goes after a while.

DD has just stopped herself at 16months. Her latch got more and more appauling during the last weeks, my supply was low as Iam PG. She only fed first thing as I found her latch was much less painful if she was properly awake, the dosey half asleep morning latch had me crying some mornings. She just didn't nuzzles for it one morning and 20mins later asked for 'tup milk' when we got up.

Yes, I also got the Lansinoh out again and used almost a whole tube in the last 6 weeks! slather it on thick and often.

you see my ds still demands a feed at least 4 times a day! so not like his older brothers who by this stage were morning and night only and more than happy to go without if needed. ds3 gets frantic if he doesnt get his milk the second he nzzles for it!

Could you be pregnant? Or be due to start back up your periods? Have you changed your shower gel/body lotion? Do you suffer from excema?

Is DS teething his back molars? As this can make them latch awkwardly to compensate for the pain/new sensation in mouth.

Does the pain go on for the whole feed or just the latch or does it hurt after the feed?

Have I asked you enough q.s?

Not much help I know but sometimes they just stop latching properly for a multitude of reasons and sometimes they don't change their latch it's how our bodies respond to the latch that changes......IYSWIM

thanks . I have been lathering on the lansinoh...still hurts like hell though.

lol SweetTruth in answer to your Qs...

lord above I hope not pregnant! DH has had the snip and I'm having periods...which returned at nine weeks and have been ovulating since then too!

He may be teething his back molars as it's about the right time for them isn't it? I didn't think the back teeth would affect his latch, but thinking about it I can see why they might!

Pain starts after he latches and continues for the whole feed, getting worse throughout. When he comes off you can actually see the indents from his two front teeth on my ariole (sp??)

My boobs are on the whole much less full feeling so maybe he is gripping on for dear life as he thinks he may lose it. I have tried to latch him deeper, but to no avail, and he has a habit of pulling his head back. He has quite a pronounced labial frenulum which caused us lots of issues in the early days, but that had settled down. I suppose it might be getting painful if he has new teeth coming in which are pushing his top teeth together?

He isn't ready to stop though ans he is quite emphatic when he wants "mumilk" and throws the cushion that he rests on when feeding at me!

Will keep slathering on the lansinoh and persevering. Maybe if I upped the frequency of feeds it might help him remember what he should be doing?

I've nursed a toddler before (and am doing so at the mo) and sometimes they do leave teeth marks on the nipple after a feed but so long as they don't hurt that's fine. It's just like sitting on grass with bare legs, you get a pressure imprint.

It's the chafing that concerns me as that suggests the latch is going wonky. Could you try put teething gel on DS's back gums about 10mins before a feed? I found that DD1 would latch awkwardly when her back molars started coming through but soon learned to cope with the teething gel.

Another thought is that he is doing the typical toddler thing of wriggling when feeding so they sometimes slightly release the latch to get comfortable as they twist about and so don't re-latch as well as they first did. I know DD2 does that if I let her feed for too long (well for me anyway) as she is a wriggler .

I hope it gets better soon and you find a solution that doesn't involve you having to grit your teeth for every feed or weaning cold turkey.

things much much better today....yay . I think the stern talking to and threat of cutting him off did the trick

He is red faced and grizzly today as well, so thinking it is probably teeth. He has fed a bit more today as well so obviously it's more comfortable for him, and Dh is convinced that his gap at the front, where the lip tie is, is getting smaller...I can understand why pressure on that bit if tissue might hurt.

Thanks for the tips sweet truth
