Sorry this is going to be pretty boring and filled with percentiles etc...

DS was born at 5.9lb and at 5 months is 15.4lb, right on the 25th percentile.
I was never worried about his weight however the latest visit to HV clinic made me wonder whether I should do something as his weight gain seems to be decreasing (from almost 50th percentile at 3 months to 25th now).

He is bf, occasionally I give him a bottle and when I do he usually has about 4oz. Obviously I don't know how much he gets when bf'ed but I suspect it's less than 4oz (as my breasts don't feel full-I know it's not an indication according to kellymom but it does make me doubt the amount of milk present).

So how do I increase his milk intake? Giving him a bottle seems to be one option I would however prefer to breastfeed him until he's 6 months (I could give him ebm but I don't seem to be able to express more than 2oz at a time). Is it worth giving him more of the formula instead of breast milk for the sake of better weight?

Or is such decreasing weight gain perfectly normal?

Thank you for patience.

its perfectly normal. as babies get older, their growth usually slows down

mozarela, your HV, if she is any good, should be able to explain to you when weight is a problem and when it isn't. Moving up to 2 centile lines (say, from 50th to 9th) is normal and unremarkable. A consistent movement more than than means 'lets take a look at what this baby's feeding is like'...the majority of these babies will be fine, too, but a few will not be, and will need more calories.
Your baby has moved one centile line only, and is happy, healthy, growing and thriving.
If you think he needs calories (why? He seems fine!) then you have them in your breasts He can have more breastfeeds, or more 'sides'; giving more formula may impact on your choice to breastfeed and is the lesser form of nutrition.

Hope this helps

thank you both. I sort of suspected it's normal, thanks for putting my mind to rest.

Just to reiterate that this is normal, DS1 went from 75th to 9th centile between 12 weeks (ish) and 20 weeks (ish), and has stayed on the 9th centile ever since, (he is nearly 3 now)
