Anyone else have to give up dairy when breastfeeding?

I'd be interested in comparing notes to find out how you managed, how much of a difference it made to your DC and how long you had to avoid eating dairy.

DS is 4 months old and I gave up dairy a month ago and it does seem to be helping a bit. He was always struggling and straining to poo and then doing lots of green ones. He was pretty windy too. I thought it might be coincidence or age that he'd improved a bit, then I ate a load of cheese one day as an experiment and he was definitely fussier.

How often do you think it's worth trying dairy? Once a month? I'm hoping at some point I can eat some dairy, and I'm happy to avoid milk and butter but I miss yoghurt and cheese!

I plan to bf until DS is at least 18 months, like I did for DD (who never had any sensitivities to the food I ate).

I'd be interested in hearing your experiences of this.

I tried my 4.5 month old with formula for the first time and he had a severe allergic reaction to it. From this date he seemed to get colic like symptoms which he never had before. I spoke to the specialist at the hospital and he said that in a small number of cases dairy can get through to baby via breastmilk and that he now had a sensitivity to dairy (since his reaction) which he did not have before. I was advised to cut out all dairy which I did until I stopped BF this week. I certainly made a difference as the colic like symptoms disappearred. I would seek advice from your HV first. I could still eat goats cheese and apro soya do yoghurts and other products. All supermarkets do a Free From range just check includes dairy free.

I was told in the past that green poo's can mean they are ill or that they are over eating- not sure if true. Could be the beginning of teething.
