Cutting down BF for a 10 month old

Hopefully some of you will be able to advise on how and when to cut down on breastfeeding a ten month old.

Currently he feeds three time during the day: first thing in the morning, sometime between 2 and 3 pm and then before he goes to sleep at about 6.30-7pm.

He doesn't have an awful lot of milk during the middle of the day feed, but it helps to soothe him when he gets a bit fractious. I'd like to try and cut this one out now, but just wanted some reassurance that this is the right thing to do.

Does a ten month old still need this midday feed, or am I OK to work through the grumpiness and try and drop it? Can I replace it with plain cow's milk at this stage, or it better to wait till he's a year old? He eats three good meals a day. Ideally I'd like to stop breastfeeding when he's about a year old.

My DS is 10 months and I've just dropped this feed in the last week.
He was not asking for it at nursery but they would give it as I had pain stakingly expressed it for him and over Christmas my husband had the children whilst I went to work.
The first day he only had an oz or 2 out of a tommy tippee cup so my DH said if he didn't ask for it should he offer. We agreed we would try without and he's been fine. I now offer a snack with water and if I'm around he does not seem to be requesting a feed.
My son still feeds morning/ night and normally at 4am ish. He eats 3 good meals a day.
I wouldn't replace it with cows milk. If you want to stop BF the afternoon feed but your child is not ready I would offer formula in a cup.

Many thanks mum2JRC. I dropped the midday feed and he doesn't miss it at all - we've now had two weeks of just early morning and bedtime milk. I think I'll try to wean him off the morning feed around the time of his first birthday (end of Feb).
