peppapig, of course you're right that it's the cumulation of research that counts, but I think you're wrong about even 'a few' studies appearing to support formula feeding.

This is only the case in the specialist area of HIV/AIDS where it does appear that if the mother is unable to breastfeed 100 per cent exclusively for 6 mths, from birth, then she needs to formula feed 100 per cent from birth, for 6 mths, and exclusively, to reduce risks of transmission.

Sorry I should have been clearer - I meant more papers like this one that appear to support formula feeding. There are a few other examples that I cant remember for the life of me now that are similar. However once you look at them closely there are methodological problems etc. Oh yes - for example that paper that appeared to show allergies were higher amongst exclusively breastfed babies but once you actually you looked at the paper it showed that the sample was made up of mothers with high levels of family allergies anyway. It couldnt tell you how much breastfeeding had reduced the allergy risk.

I ff one of my dc and bf the other,if as seems to be the theory in the article,it's all to do with conditions in the womb surely my 2 would have had similar conditions in the womb so how come the one who was ff seemed much more prone to illnesses than the bf one?(of course it could just be a coincidence)
