Help please - Loose Poo and wind

I am sorry if I have put this under the wrong topic but I have not used this for nearly 4 and a half years now ! My second DS is 5 and a half weeks and has been on SMA Gold since birth. He has always been quite windy and a very grunty baby however in the last 2.5 weeks he has started to do only one runny poo once or at most twice a day. At three weeks he was suffering with constipation and passing pellets which I know are common for babies on SMA Gold but this has started and confused me. The consistency is like sauce and generally arrives after a series of explosive farts (sorry for too much info!) I spoke to my Health visitor who said that I should wait and see for another 2 weeks until his 8 week check and see what the doctor says. I don't really want to wait and he is becoming really fussy. I have had him on infacol for colic since 2 weeks old but he is still really windy. Has anyone experienced the same or does anyone have any suggestions?

Poor you, you must be worried.

It may be that I don't have all the information, but if your baby has been constipated and is now passing very loose stools it is possible he is still constipated higher up, and just passing the more liquid overflow around the blockage (it can tendsto be v.watery if this is the case). It may be that what you are seeing now is actually more normal and he just starting to settle down. Were you given a stool softener for him? If so could he be getting too much? I'm certain a GP visit would be reasonable just to put your mind at ease, why worry for the next fortnight for no reason?

Other suggestions,

Are you happy that you are making up your bottles correctly, it is a really common cause for constipation. The ready made formula can be good to keep everything moving and it can be helpful to try them for a couple of days if you can (expensive I know). Dr Brown bottles are excellent for windy babies, try them if you are using something different.

Good luck, I do hope some of this is useful. I'm sure there will be others along to help soon.

Hi Lillybunny. I am worried but the HV didn't seem concerned at all and said that when I go to the docs for his 8 week check the doc may tell me to change formula to a soya based one as he may have an intolerance. DS doesn't seem to cry when passing stools but grunts and wriggles ALOT most of the time (especially at night which is driving me crazy and when passing wind!)
He has not been given a stool softener but this did all start when I gave him cooled boiled water to soften the pellets. I have not done this often. I too am wondering if this is just normal for him to pass motions like this as most days he seems happy within himself when he is not windy.
I was thinking of trying colief but most posts seem to say that this causes liquid poos so I am not sure if this is a good idea. Also we are making up feeds on demand and it seems like a nightmare to try and wait 30 mins for it to work whilst you have a screaming baby!

Hey, how's it going?
I wouldn't have thought he has an intolerance from what you have said, perhaps just a touch of colic maybe? Surely if he was lactose intolerant he would have never been constipated, just loose all the time? If you are worried there is this product to try, never used it myself but possibly worth a look (bottom of the page)

The grunting and wiggling is probably a hang over from when he was constipated previously. If he has experienced pain passing stools in the past it will make him upset and anxious each time he needs to have his bowels open, in case it hurts him again.
Definately try the Dr Brown's bottles too, seems to make a big difference for lots of little ones.

Hey there. Thanks for the web link. It sounds exactly like colief which has Lactase Enzyme in it and I am thinking that it may be worth a try but both appear to have the same problem of having to wait 30 mins for it to work in the bottle before giving the feed. I am thinking of resorting to preparing feeds in advance so that we can try this but my hubby says that we should not prepare in advance! (we did with DS 1 and never did him any harm) .
I agree with you about the lactose intolerance and having been constipated.I mentioned this to the HV and she said that sometimes a sensitivity can develop at any time!! i Thnk that he does have colic perhaps. We tried gripe water for the wind yesterday and today but not sure if it actually helped at all. May just go back to infacol as its easier to give and having the same reaction. He opened his bowels twice yesterday and second one had more of a mustard consistency than sauce - maybe somewhere inbetween so not sure if its just settling down.
Thanks for the advice. How may LO's do you have and how old are they?

Sounds like things are settling down. Maybe a bit of baby massage would help his tummy, there are some good free courses about.

I've just got the one dd (4), and she suffered with colic terribly. It was a nightmare for a long time so I really do sympathise.

There is a lot of information about baby wearing (using a sling) and we found this really helpful too, there's loads of info if you google. My favourite advice was from books by Sears and Sears, here's a link to the colic page of their website.

No answer I'm afraid but thought you may have some comfort in knowing someone else is going through the same as you! My 2nd is 14wks old and seems to have cronic pain when trying to poo, which is only every other day at mo and is green and smells! HV, docs and hospital say it's a virus, nothing I can do but I'm not convinced. She also throws up ALOT after feeds. I've tried Infacol, Gripe Water, Gaviscon (which made her constipated for 2 days!) and Colief. I'm now on SMA Gold Lactose Free. We shall see if it does anything. She also caught a cold/virus off my 1st so a running nose and bad cough to boot (although cough is easing off now). Good luck but let me know if you find a solution

sleepymama · 13/01/2010 10:15

Hi Moomins. Sorry about your LO. How long has she had this? How is she getting on with the lactose free formula? Any better?
We took DS to docs on sunday and they have taken a stool sample to see if he has a milk sensitivity. I mentioned the fact that I think he may have reflux but the doc completly dismissed it! Said that everything I mentioned is normal behaviour. We have started him on Aptimil this morning to see if that makes any difference as he started to bring up lots of milk over last 2 days. DS has also developed a blocked nose at night over last 2 days (sad) so its all getting a bit much now. Let me know how you are getting on . Hope it improvess for you and your LO
