to be used on the night i arrive? i would pack it in an insulated bag with an ice pack, in the depths of my suitcase in the morning and use it at bedtime that evening - would that work ok, do you think?

Should be fine! How long will you be traveling for?

olivo · 04/01/2010 20:10

Hmm, a four hour flight plus a couple of hours either side, i guess. will be able to put it in a fridge when we arrive (providing the suitcase arrives with us )

Can you not just express when you get to your destination? Or even en-route?

olivo · 04/01/2010 20:43

not really, quite crap at expressing - can only ever express first thing in the morning while dd2 is still asleep but will be leaving at some ungodly hour, and will laso have 3yo dd1 in tow. it'll be pretty stressful but i;d feel better knowing i had some ebm with me for if dd2 (4mo) wont setlle that night.

Sorry, I'm a bit confused as to why you want to take ebm if you're travelling with your children. Why not just bf dd2 directly, wouldn't that be the easiest option? I'm sure your suggestion will work, by the way, but it just seems unnecessarily complex since you'll have your breasts with you.

(hope that doesn't sound facetious - it's not meant to!)

olivo · 04/01/2010 20:50

no, not facetious at all, speedy . dd2 has been having a bottle of ebm for weeks now, at my bedtime. the odd times i have tried to feed her myself at that time, she has still seemed hungry and hasnt settled. I know it will be stressful enough trying to get them both to sleep in a strange place, i just thought the usual ebm would help.

Oh dear, if you're having probs getting them both to sleep I sympathise. DS (3) has been a brilliant sleeper for two years now, but every time he drops off to sleep (i.e. every night) I still consider it a small miracle.

In case you do have trouble, how about laying on a double bed with them both - you on the left, DD2 in the middle and DD1 on the right. You could then bf DD2 whilst stroking and comforting DD1.

I sincerely hope it all goes smoothly for you, whatever you do!

olivo · 04/01/2010 21:04

thanks speedy. you're right, it will help to sleep with them both. dd1 is a bit insecure at the mo, i think having realised dd2 is here to stay! and this is supposed to be a holiday for us....

Aww, it's tough. I'll be in the same position in a few months, when DC2 comes along. Really hope your hols go well and that you get even a teensy bit of rest.

nigglewiggle · 04/01/2010 21:16

You should be able to take it in your hand luggage, which might be easier. Ignore me if you have discounted this because of space, but if you are worried about being allowed to take it on board, you should be ok. They allow baby milk and they recently allowed me to take a bottle of medicine that had to be refrigerated in a cool bag with an ice block.

olivo · 04/01/2010 21:58

oooh, thanks for that, niggle. i'll maybe take it with me in my bag then.
good luck with DC2, speedy!

will she not have to taste it?

MadameMoe · 05/01/2010 09:23

I recently traveled with just over 3 liters of EBM in my hold luggage. I had it in a small cool box, inside a bag for the journey and all was well, it was actually out of the freezer for nearly seven hours but didn't defrost. Thank goodness.

I wasn't able to use ice packs (there wasn't enough room in the cool box) so I made it as cold as possible before I put the milk in.

Considering you want the milk to defrost I really can't see there being a problem at all.

If you do decide to take it in your hand luggage be sure to check with the airline/airport, it's be awful if they confiscated it.

StealthPolarBear · 05/01/2010 09:32

i thought you were only allowed a few 100 mls of liquid in hand luggage? or has that changed again?

MadameMoe · 05/01/2010 11:23

Yes, I think it is only 100mls that's allowed in hand luggage. I think more than one lot of 100mls is allowed though. Maybe the OP could split the feed before freezing, if it's not too late for that.

My milk was in my checked in luggage. TBH it's almost certainly a lot colder in the hold than in the passenger bit of the plane.

olivo · 05/01/2010 12:19

thanks everyone, it seems it would be easiest to put it in my hold baggage - dont want to run the risk of them taking it from me - i hate wasting ebm!! I'm going to have several liquids already, due to Dd's medicine, which i have had to decant into 100ml bottles.
how i long for the old days when you could take anything anywhere!
