The delicate balance of BF and weaning

Not sure if I should be posting on weaning or feeding boards sorry!

I have started weaning DD (6 mnths) just lunchtimes and she is absolutely loving her food. However, it seems to have affected her bf not just at this time but all others except nightfeeds. Daytime feeds are now very short, so short that I worry she is taking enough. She appears happy and healthy otherwise.

I am keen to carry on bf until I go back to work at 10 months, so could anyone who's already been through this help me with their experience of how bf changed once solids were introduced? At the moment, I'm sticking to the every 3 hours type of interval which has always suited her, but does this change?

Thanks

I fed on demand and just followed DS's lead, I'm not sure how it works if you feed to a routine but I would probably follow her lead and let her take as much or as little milk as she wants. Teething can also affect breastfeeding so it might be temporary. I think at first the solids are an addition to the milk so the amount of milk doesn't drop, but if she has taken to weaning very quickly it might be that she drops the milk feeds quicker. I think most babies start dropping milk feeds at about 8 or 9 months.

As an aside, you could probably carry on feeding morning and night once you are back at work (if you want to of course) as a 10 month old doesn't really need milk during the day.

Not sure what your source is for that Bertie? Babies need either breast or formula milk as the main source of nutrition for the first year - with a gradual wind down.

This is a long document - the relevant page is 2 (unless you want to plough through it)

DS dropped his feeds (once we started BLW at 6months) really quickly, much to my upset. The first day he had solids he refused milk all day! However, after a week or so he returned to the same or at least similar amount of feeds as before, although they were maybe a bit shorter. My sister experienced both of her DCs being this "new fangled" way for a short period of time as well.

This was until we had a strike type situation at 8months, but that is another story...

logrrl Thanks for the reassurance that this may well be run-of-the-mill, I will keep checking nappies and offering the feeds, she has as I said been feeding beautifully before bed, twice in the night and first thing in the morning so maybe she's just doing her own thing!

Also thanks everyone for other replies

Sorry no I don't have a source, it's just what I've always heard when talking about weaning. Sorry if I was incorrect
