One Boob Wonder...

Hi all,

I'm concerned about my left breast. It doesn't seem to be producing half as well as my right. DS doesn't seem to swallow much when he suckles there, just falls asleep, where he goes mad on the right breast. It never really feels engorged like the right breast does and doesn't produce as much when i pump (not that either produces much when pumping).

Does it sound to you like I have low milk supply in the left breast? If so, what can I do to remedy it? Then again, perhaps it's his latch on the left or he just doesn't like the left... ??

Finally, is it possible to breast feed a big baby off of one breast only?

Thanks very much,
SM

hello, sorry but I have no advice but I just want you to know you are not alone. My left breast is very different to my right breast...it does produce milk of course but nowhere near as much and my 13 week old daughter will only take it for 5 - 10 minutes before screaming for the right which has much more milk. the left is also now much smaller. sorry I can't help.

apparenlty lots of babies favour one breast
DD likes my right one better (i get lop sided)
you can alter your hold to try to get him more used to it - maybe rugby ball hold

i always feed DD at night from my left (more than my right) and give her the first feed of the day from the left when she is most hungry to get her to take more and keep my supply up

am not an expert BTW, just my experience (DD is 12 weeks)

Thanks very much both of you. I'm glad it's normal for a babe to have a favourite side. I'm going to try different positions to see if he can get more out of the left side. I'm glad to hear it's possible to keep on breastfeeding with one dominant breast as well. Good luck with yours!
