Comfort Sucking = Wind/Tummy Troubles ??

Apologies in advance for waffly post. DS is 2 weeks old and I have barely slept so am totally knackered and a bit fuzzy headed....

DS was 10lb 5oz born and is 2 weeks old today. He has been weighed today and is 11lb 12 oz so has been gaining weight very well .

He has never gone for more than 2 hours between feeds and has a good few hours a day where he cluster feeds. I know all this is normal but a lot of the time he seems to just want to comfort suck and then when the milk comes in, he pulls away and gets very upset (and gets a face full of milk ). I'm pretty sure he just wants to comfort suck and isn't actually hungry all the time.

He seems to either be asleep, feeding or screaming. He just is really unsettled between feeds as though he's either not satisfied (but weight gain, nappies etc. would seem to indicate otherwise ??) or is actually over full and got wind/tummy ache etc.

I have tried a dummy but he's not interested.

I'm just having a bit of a wobble and am doubting myself a bit

Any advice ?

Aww, congratulations! Sounds like you're doing a brilliant job.

I remember my DS being like this at Christmas last year when he was about the same age as your DS; I think it was (a) partly colic and (b) the fact that I'd dragged him around various people's houses for three days.

Have you tried him with some infacol or sommat? I think it's OK for newbies. A sling to settle him perhaps?

Hope you get some sleep soon - can your DP take him for a bit so you can have a rest?

Oooh lovey.

Have you tried some different styles of dummy. Shmoks would only take a particular mam one.

Also when I had days like this last yr. I chucked them both in the buggy and just walked the baby would fall asleep with the movement. I used to leave shmoks in the back garden when we got home it was rather chilly but figured he was wrapped up warm A bit of fresh air wouldnt hurt. Which gave my boobs a bit of a rest. Means you can have a natter with Tilly while you are out and about.

Cbeebies is great and it will not do Tilly any harm to be sat in front of while you are strapped to the sofa feeding Ferg.

I really feel for you love I was in the same place this time last yr, and remember it well.

Just remember you are doing a brilliant job and Fergus is obviously thriving and on the plus side his milk monstering is making you uber skinny again.

Sorry just realised none of what I said are helping your original post.

Try him high up on your shoulder so that your shoulder is resting on his tummy may help with wind also can you do the tree hold with him lay him out so his tummy is resting on the inside of your arm with his legs dangling either side of your arm and his head resting on the palm of your hand IYSWIM. Infacol could also help. Cycling his legs. Can Daddy see if he has a magic finger. DP used his pinky and it used to settle both my boys at this age.

Thank you both

Its not that I mind letting him comfort suck (for the time being at least - ask me again in a few weeks when my nipples have actually dropped off and I might say differently ), I just hate the fact he seems so unhappy/uncomfortable. DD was such a chilled out baby (but still fed very well). I think its just a shock to have one that seems to angry at the world

Anyway - will try some different dummies and infacol. He does love the "tree" hold but he's getting a bit too big for me to do it with one arm now !

Thanks again
